You know, when you feel quite good about yourself, meaning that despite knowing that you’re about as flawed as every other human being, you nevertheless respect yourself and have a desire to treat yourself with the same consideration you treat others, it’s almost impossible to actually pick up a “rubbish” piece of food and put in your mouth.

Oftentimes I’ve begun to work with people who are overweight or even morbidly obese and the issue of self-esteem or self-respect has reared its head right from the start, and this is tied in very strongly to a sense of shame. I find this type of thinking especially popular in people looking for fast weekly diets. It can be quite a challenge to help my client to see that feeling ashamed of being overweight is about as illogical as feeling ashamed because he or she has chicken pox, or a cold.

And even more challenging to help them believe they have the right to exist without shame or guilt. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not that I believe that “big is beautiful” or even that fat is OK. No way! Overweight is crippling every health system in the civilized world! But overweight IS an “accident” or an “illness” that no-one develops deliberately, and therefore should NEVER be subject to guilt or shame. It is totally illogical to think that someone can “cure” their overweight by willpower and that they should be ashamed for not trying hard enough, for instance.

This is as insane as saying someone can cure their influenza by willpower. This type of thinking is counterproductive to naturally losing weight fast. In addition, guilt and shame are traumatic feelings that do a lot of damage, and can often lead to massive over-eating in an attempt to self-comfort. Often this happens in one week diets, and other weekly diets. Sadly, current government health initiatives, aimed at nagging people into more healthy lifestyles, and also dangerous shows like “The Biggest Loser”, have unleashed a TIDAL WAVE of guilt and shame that have led to not only more obesity, but also to a TIDAL WAVE of eating disorders amongst children, thousands of whom are dying of diseases like anorexia or bulimia.

Most people hate working out so early, but it’s fantastic if you want to shed those pounds. Just make sure you eat well right after, and had a solid dinner the night before, because a lack of glycogen in your system (energy in your muscles) could make you ‘bonk’, or crash.

Start slow. Don’t assume that because you’ve started a fitness program you’re going to rock it out the first day. If you go crazy and try to be all over the top right from the beginning, the odds of your burning out or hurting yourself are high. Think of it as a tub of hot bath water. Do you jump right in, or ease in slowly, letting your body acclimate itself to the heat? The answer here should be obvious, and applies to working out. Remember-this isn’t a six week journey that then ends. This is just the beginning of a new life style, so in a sense, there’s no rush. Take your time, do it right, be wise and sensible, and you’ll excel. Rush it, burn out, and you’ll be back on the couch in 3 weeks.

Which means, if you get sore after a workout be mindful of your body. Be sure to be able to tell the difference between a healthy soreness of your muscles, and pain. In the beginning you’ll definitely be sore, but that soreness should feel luxurious, making you enjoy stretching out your quads and calves, rotating your arms, twisting your spine from side to side. You should be able to tell you worked out, and not actually feel any sharp pains, or deep aches. If you do, if you feel something that makes you wince, or hiss, or feel a little worried, go easy on yourself. Take hot showers, stretch carefully, and rest. Again, this is not a race. If anything, it’s a marathon, not a sprint, so go easy. Make sure you’re comfortable and challenged, not in pain and burning out. Listen to your body, first and always!

Finally, and this is the hardest to convince ladies to believe, add weight resistance to your workouts. You will not immediately turn into Arnold Schwarzenegger, all veiny and ripped. Instead, you will begin to build lean muscle, convert fat faster, feel better, stronger, leaner, tougher, better. Remember, guys have to hit the gym and bench press hundreds of pounds to bulk up. Adding a ten pound free weight to your workout? Will not make you bulk up, but it WILL give you incredible benefits. Nothing burns fat faster than muscle, and this happens even when you’re not working out. And think about it: what are you going tone, if you don’t have some muscle in there? Nothing! So pick up that free weight, and prepare to look absolutely gorgeous.

Should You Use the EZ Curl Bar in the Gym?

If you’ve spent any time in a commercial gym, you’ll inevitably have run across weird, malformed pieces of metal that other people seem to think are normal pieces of equipment. This ranges from a host of different grips for cable exercises (strange triangles, V’s of knotted rope, knurled bars only a foot long) and barbells that seem to have been run over by strange tractors, their forms all bent and warped. What are all these bizarre devices, and should you investigate them further, learn how to use them? One in particular gets a lot of usage, and that’s the EZ Curl Bar, the warped and twisted barbell. You’ll see people doing bicep curls with them all day long. Should you?

The EZ Curl bar is meant to be used as an alternative to the barbell for the express purpose of doing curls. As such, the section where you would normally grip is twisted so that your hand need not turn outwards so much. Instead of raising the bar with your palms facing the ceiling, your palms rise at a 45 degree angle. Does this make for a stronger curl, does this stress your bicep more? The answer is quite clearly: no.

Think about how curls work. Your biceps distal end attaches to your ulna. Your ulna is the longer of your two arm bones, and lies beneath your radius. Your bicep is responsible for the movement in which your hand is turned palm up; when this happens, your bicep pulls on the ulna, and rotates your forearm. Therefore, the more the palm is rotated up, the more your bicep is activated. Palm facing straight toward the ceiling activates the most bicep, and doing a curl with your palm thus rotated is the most challenging form.

Therefore using the EZ Curl bar robs you of the benefits of doing a proper curl. While it might feel more comfortable or technical or whatever reason you might wish to give for using the bar, the truth is that it robs the exercise of its full benefit. Try this if you don’t believe me: clench your hand into a fist, and tense up your bicep. Now, hold your fist palm down, and then slowly rotate it palm up, with your other hand pressed to your clenched bicep. Notice how your bicep gets shorter and rounder as you rotate your fist up? No coincidence.

Does this mean the EZ Curl bar is useless? Not quite. You can use the EZ Curl Bar in the lying triceps extension, wherein you lie flat on your back on a bench, loaded bar held directly up with straight arms, and then carefully bed the elbows so as to lower the bar toward you face, lowering it past your head and level with the bench, before raising it to straight arm once more. Since the triceps muscles involved are not affected by the rotation of your hand, the use of the EZ Curl Bar makes sense in this case, and is more comfortable.

Likewise, there are many people who will doubt your abilities to achieve any of your goals such as losing x amount of pounds or building x pounds of lean muscle.  But when you realize that you can control your own destiny by following a few basic principles, you are destined to do what many consider to be the impossible and get the results you desire.

The problem many people have is they talk a mean game but at the end of the day, they really do not believe that it is possible or doubt themselves which leads to their destruction.  The best way to avoid this is to change a few things.

With that being said, here are 5 things you can do to walk the walk!

1. Think of Your End Goal and Hold On to That Thought

What I mean by this is to think of what it is you are trying to do such as losing ten pounds.  Once you have established that thought, DO NOT erase it or let anyone tell you that it is impossible to achieve that thought.  Think of your thought as concrete once it has hardened.  You can walk all over it but it will not break.  This is the way you need to be when holding on to the thought of achieving your end goal.

2. Immerse Yourself in the Culture

Simply surround yourself around things that will get you closer to your goal such as reading a new fitness or weight loss article.  Even go as far as hanging posters on your wall of the model body you want.  Whether it is a strong muscular physique or a toned beach body, make sure to do this important step.

What you are doing with this is immersing yourself around the culture of your end goal.  It will serve as a constant reminder of what it is that you are trying to do and eliminate any thoughts that may sway you into thinking it is not possible.

3. Forget About Failures of The Past

Regardless of how you may currently feel, think of today as a new beginning.  Forget about your past failures and realize that they can serve as a lesson for achieving your end goal.  These lessons can be looked at as things NOT to do when you travel along your new path of success.

Going back to holding on to that thought of what you want, thinking positive goes hand in hand with this as the energy you feel within you will release a sense of self-empowerment.  And anyone who has achieved their set goals knows that feeling like you are in power of the outcome is important!

4. Energy + Motions = Emotions

Always remember that your emotions play a key role in determining whether or not you will achieve your set goals.  When you allow your energy to move in the wrong direction or allow the thoughts and actions of others to determine your very own thoughts, it is then that you self-destruct and become your own worst enemy.

With positive thinking and surrounding yourself around the right people, you will allow your energy to move in the right direction and you will be one step closer to your end goal.

What I like to do when I feel that I am not in power or control of my very own emotions is to think of a simple analogy.  That analogy is that you can take a room filled with complete darkness and with the strike of a match, the room is instantly filled with light, truth and wisdom.  But you cannot do the opposite!  You cannot take a room full of light, truth and wisdom and make it pitch black.

5. Write Down The Things That Make You Happy

To help prevent negative thoughts from entering in your mind, it is a great idea to write down the things that bring joy and happiness to your life.  For instance, for some it may be writing about your pet dog which may bring happiness to your life.  For others it may be a son, daughter, boyfriend, girlfriend, occupation or the fact that you lost 3 pounds.

Regardless of what the things that bring happiness to your life may be, write them all down on a daily basis if needed until you have mastered your emotions.
