How Much Fish Oil is Optimal and What’s The Best Source?

With the ever growing awareness of the benefits of omega 3, how much fish oil one should take is perhaps the most common question, especially as there are no national guidelines to use. What’s more important really is the quality, so here are some tips and my recommendations for a daily dose.

How much fish oil is advised per day seems to vary greatly, but the optimal amount for the average person is around 2g a day, with 1g per capsule.

The omega 3 fatty acids that provide the health benefits are DHA and EPA, and recent research shows us that the DHA is responsible for most of the benefits. Our brains are composed of over 30% DHA fats to show just how vital it is!

Since our bodies cannot manufacture omega 3, and with over 90% of us being deficient in it, a daily distilled supplement is the best solution.

The one I take twice a day contains 280mg of DHA and 120mg of EPA in a 1000mg or 1g capsule to give you a guide.

For certain conditions like arthritis, you can take more quality oils a day, with four being normal for those with severe joint pain and studies have shown that some people are able to come of their prescription meds altogether, such is the power of fish oil on this condition.

Purity is essential and to make sure all the toxins from the fish are removed, any supplement you select should have undergone molecular distillation. This removes mercury, lead and other contaminants to leave only safe oil and is absolutely essential for younger children and pregnant mothers.

The very best fish species to use today are Hoki and Tuna as the mix of these two oils yields much higher anti-inflammatory properties to provide even more protection from heart disease and strokes.

I hope this article has shown you how much fish oil to take per day and the way to ensuring you only get the very best, free from any contaminants and high in the valuable DHA omega 3 fats.

Garlic – The Anti Everything

Garlic limits inflammatory compounds

Garlic is great at reducing inflammation because it contains compounds that inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase which are enzymes that promote inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Along with the Vitamin C it contains, these anti-inflammatory compounds in fresh garlic make it especially useful in protecting the body against severe attacks of asthma and can also reduce the pain and inflammation that is caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

NF Kappa B and the common cold

Studies conducted at the University of Munich in Germany have found garlic to significantly reduce the activity of the chemical mediator of inflammation: NF kappa-B. Nuclear transcription factor (NF) kappa-B is a chemical that is activated as part of your immune systems inflammatory response to invading organisms. A surge in NF kappa-B can be triggered by things like allergenic foods, high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, colds, physical trauma and other infections. This NF kappa-B surge promotes the inflammation response and sets up ideal conditions for viruses to replicate. In these German studies, unfertilized garlic caused a 25% drop in NF kappa-B activity in blood samples.

Allicin: the microbe killer

Allicin, the sulfur compound that forms when garlic is chopped or otherwise crushed, not only gives garlic that distinctive pungency, it is also a powerful antiviral and antibacterial agent with the ability to annihilate potentially harmful microbes. Research studies on Allicin show it to be effective against the common cold, flu and stomach viruses. It has also shown the ability to fight off Candida yeast and even defend the body against powerful pathogens such as tuberculosis and botulism.

Peptic ulcers

Garlic cannot prevent a person from getting an infection from Heliobacter pylori, the bacterium which causes peptic ulcers. However, eating garlic may help keep this bacterium from doing too much damage. A study conducted in Turkey compared two groups of people: one group that loved to eat lots of garlic both raw and cooked and another group that avoided it at all costs. Blood samples were collected for 19 months and evaluated for the presence of H.pylori. While both groups did display comparable results when it came to the presence of the bacterium, the garlic loving group did display a much lower H.pylori antibody count within their blood.

Drug resistant Strains of Bacteria

Garlic has also shown the ability to be a potent antibiotic even against strains of drug resistant bacteria. A study published in 2003 by the University of California Irvine Medical School, showed that garlic juice displayed significant antibacterial activity against many antibiotic-resistant strains including staphylococci, enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

ACNE (Acne Vulgaris) – Causes, Types and Herbal Remedies

Introduction

The sudden onset of a ‘zit’ before a date is every teenager’s nightmare. Most teenagers – and a large percentage of adults – suffer from Acne Vulgaris, which can shows up as whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples on the face, neck, shoulders, back, and chest. A recent study conducted in the USA revealed that 17 million people suffer from acne, spawning a large market for anti-acne products.

Causes

Skin pores contain oil glands which keep the skin and hair lubricated. Sometimes, these sebaceous pores become clogged with excess oil and bacteria, resulting in acne. Broadly, the causes of acne may be the following:

  • Bacteria, which easily infects oil glands and pores
  • Wrong diet, irregular meals, excessive intake of starches, sugar, and fatty foods
  • Chronic constipation
  • Hormonal activity, particularly in teenagers
  • Incorrect use of cosmetics that clog the pores
  • Genes

Types of acne

  • Whiteheads: Whiteheads are caused when a pore is completely blocked, trapping sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells, causing a white appearance on the surface.
  • Blackheads: Blackheads result when a pore is only partially blocked, allowing some of the trapped sebum (oil), bacteria, and dead skin cells to slowly drain to the surface. The black color is caused by a reaction of the skin’s own pigment, melanin, reacting with the oxygen in the air.
  • Papules: Papules are inflamed, red, tender bumps with no head.
  • Pustules: A pustule is similar to a whitehead, but is inflamed, and appears as a red circle with a white or yellow center.
  • Severe acne vulgaris is characterized by nodules and cysts.
    • Nodules are large, hard bumps under the skin’s surface, and are prone to leaving behind scars.
    • An acne cyst can appear similar to a nodule, but is pus-filled and painful.
  • Acne Rosacea can look similar to the acne vulgaris and is visible in patches.
  • Severe forms of acne include acne conglobata (large lesions) and pyoderma faciale (severe facial acne afflicting only females.

Prevention

  • Eat healthy. Include fresh fruits and vegetables and anti-oxidants such as tomatoes in your diet.
  • Stay clean. Use a natural antibacterial, non-oily face wash/body wash. Those containing tea tree oil are a good option. Do not scrub your face, which can irritate the skin. The aim of washing is to remove dirt and oil from the pores.
  • If you have constipation, treat it immediately.
  • Drink lots of water.
  • Avoid chocolate, fried food, and refined sugar.
  • Take B-complex and zinc supplements daily to strengthen the skin’s resistance to acne.
  • Watch where you put your face: don’t place your cheek against things and surfaces that may carry infection, such as telephone receivers, window panes, used pillow cases etc.

Remedies

  • Do NOT squeeze or pop a pimple. Squeezing can push bacteria and pus deeper into the skin, leaving permanent scars.
  • Wash your face with warm salt water. This will get rid of the oil and dirt without irritating the acne.
  • Apply cucumber paste on your face. Wash it off after 20-30 minutes with lukewarm water.
  • Aloe vera gel is an effective natural cure for acne. Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties.
  • If you get a bad case of acne, see a dermatologist.

Discover Refined Fish Oil

Did you know refined fish oil has been used since the days of the Vikings as a food supplement and for medicinal purposes? The oils were primarily recommended, at that time, to increase bowel motility and to reduce joint pain.

Just 50 years ago, the supplements were recommended for those same purposes. Moms also gave it to their children to help reduce the risk of rickets and vitamin A deficiency, because those nutrients were present in the oils, as well.

Many brands are no longer sources of vitamin A or D. The concern is that too much vitamin A can be toxic, especially to children. Oils that are derived from the liver (cod liver oil, for example) contain too much vitamin A for children and for pregnant women. Too much vitamin A causes birth defects.

Vitamin D is only found in some species of fish. If the brand you are thinking about buying is a good source of vitamin D, it should be listed on the nutrient facts label, located on the back of the bottle.

Research indicates that vitamin D deficiency is on the rise, among people of all ages, regardless of whether they are underweight or obese. So, it’s a good idea to be sure to get enough of that nutrient, but refined fish oil is not your best choice for increasing your vitamin D intake. Cholecalciferol or D3 is the most readily absorbable form of the nutrient, other than the type that you skin makes when you are exposed to UV rays from the sun.

The nutrients that are provided by refined fish oil are two that are largely absent in the modern-day diet. They are Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid; DHA and EPA.

DHA and EPA are long-chained polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids. They are not found in vegetable oils or plant foods. At one time, they may have been present in the wild game that people ate. But, today, they are found only in fish.

DHA is found in some types of marine algae, but the algae supplements do not contain EPA. Both are important, according to research.

One of the benefits of increased omega-3 intake is a reduced risk of depression. In different studies DHA alone, EPA alone and a combination of the two fatty acids were used. The best results were seen when volunteers were given both EPA and DHA.

So, other than eating oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel or sardines, the only way to get EPA and DHA in the diet is by taking a refine fish oil supplement. Of course, all supplements are not the same and you need to shop with care. But, if you choose a good brand, you could reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer and a variety of seemingly age-related diseases.

From what we have learned, it isn’t about age, itself. People get older without suffering from disease. It’s about small amounts of damage that occur on a molecular level, every day of a person’s life. We can’t stop the damage completely. But, with refined fish oil and a healthy lifestyle, we should be able to keep it to a minimum.

The Healing Benefits of Fish Oil In Our Body

Did you know that there are healing benefits of fish oil? Believe it or not, there are actually quite a few, and one of the main ones is helping with cardiovascular disease, as a treatment alternative. Cardiovascular disease is a prominent killer in the U.S., typically brought on by chronic inflammation and poor lifestyle choices such as diet, exercise, too much stress, and lack of sleep.

While the causes of cardiovascular disease are still not entirely known, evidence does suggest that a healthy lifestyle lowers the risk of having it. In addition, experts believe that emotional or physical trauma is an important factor for getting it, and that cardiovascular disease victims suffer from frequent abnormal transmission responses to pain.

Insomnia and sleep disorders take their toll in cardiovascular disease patients, and a lack of sleep is one major cause of inflammation and stress on the body. Not only are the healing benefits of fish oil applicable to cardiovascular disease in general, but they also apply to many symptoms that exacerbate the disease. The potential to alleviate both symptoms and the disease itself is a powerful part of fish growing appeal.

For example, fish oil is known to lower triglycerides, improve cholesterol, thin the blood, and even unclog blocked arteries! It truly is like a miracle cure. Of course it won’t be nearly as effective if you don’t enjoy a healthy lifestyle, but the healing benefits of it extend not only to treatment, but also to prevention, of cardiovascular disease.

Take chronic inflammation as a good example. When you have chronic inflammation, you could eventually suffer from a number of dangerous conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, cancer, etc. You can also suffer from conditions that lower your quality of life, such as acne and arthritis. The problem with inflammation is that the body is often attacking itself, a condition referred to as an autoimmune disease (attacking oneself).

Fish oil specifically works to counteract not only the inflammation you’re experiencing, but also many of the other causes of these conditions. If you are suffering from heart troubles, you not only can lower your risk by reducing inflammation, but you can also help by alleviating many of the causes, like clogged arteries and high cholesterol. It helps with depression too, by giving the brain more of what it’s made of: DHA (one of the Essential Fatty Acids found in this oil).

Overall, the healing benefits of fish oil are as astounding as they are numerous. For a huge number of conditions, this allows you to either fully recover from them or provide some relief from symptoms. Best of all, over your lifetime, you’re less likely to develop the conditions that claim so many lives. Just make sure that when you go out and get your fish oil, you buy the kind called “pharmaceutical-grade”, which leaves out all of the nasty toxins and contaminants that are commonly found dumped in rivers and oceans. Hopefully you can start enjoying the many healing benefits of fish oil soon!

Are You Aware Of The Important Facts About Omega 3 DHA supplements?

Omega 3 DHA, EPA and ALA are the three types of long chain, polyunsaturated essential fats. Since they are not produced naturally in our body, we have to obtain them via food in our daily diet. Of all the three, DHA is of much importance and most of the benefits of omega 3 are related to it.

Omega 3 DHA is found in fishes such as salmon, tuna, and halibut. Because of their top position in the food chain, they have good chances to hoard toxins like mercury, lead, PCBs etc. Because of this concern world has shifted to omega 3 DHA supplements. These supplements not only have higher levels of DHA but also have lesser degree of contamination.

According to many experts and researches, regular consumption of DHA has many benefits for all – male, female, child or adult. It plays an important role at every phase of our life.

Many pregnant females are suggested by their doctors to be on high DHA capsules. This helps in better brain and nervous system growth of the fetus. Newly born babies show less sleep disorder. Later while growing up they have better hand/eye coordination, and good learning and retaining skills.

It has been proven clinically that women who are on omega 3 diet for a long period of time, have less chances of having breast cancer. These women also experience less menstrual pain.

Regular intake of DHA supplements are known for inhibiting the diseases like Dyslexia, Bipolar disorder, Arthritis, etc. It also helps in controlling the cholesterol and blood pressure.

A word of caution here, not all omega3 supplements are effective. Above benefits can be reaped only if correct omega 3 DHA supplement is consumed regularly. Effective one must have under gone molecular distillation process, this ensures the end result is highly concentrated and has lower levels of toxins. It should not have any rancid odor and should smell like ocean water. Studies have shown that supplement consisting of both tuna as well as hoki fish oil increases the benefits of omega3 by two and half folds.

Since, there are many omega 3 DHA supplements available in the market, and all of them may not be effective and give you desired results; you should do your own research before starting on any one of them.

If you wish to learn more on omega3 DHA, its benefits and best supplement that gives you the desired results along with value for money, I invite you to visit my website, where I have explained everything in detail.

Everything You Wanted To Know About Fishoil

You’ve probably heard it a hundred times — Fishoil is good for health but have you ever wondered, what are the benefits that you can reap out of it?
Let me answer you in brief — what is fish oil, why it is better than other sources, what its benefits are, and how to select the best amongst thousands available in the market.

What is fish oil?

Fishoil is derived from oily fish. These oils are rich source of DHA type of omega 3 fatty acids and essential for over all development of our body. You will be surprised to know that fish itself never produces this oil on its own rather it gets accumulated after fishes consume microalgae.

Why is it better than other sources of DHA especially fish?

Fish like Tuna, Hoki and Salmon have high content of DHA but because of their position in food chain, the toxic levels are also very high in them. This is the reason FDA recommends to reduce the consumption of such fishes. But there is nothing to worry about; you can still compensate the deficiency of omega 3 by using fish oil supplements. Because fishoil meant for human consumption should be safe therefore a regulatory standard called International Fish Oil Standards was set up some time back. Any company that produces fish oil has to get the final produce reviewed under this program. Mind you, these standards are very high and the processes are very strict, they do not tolerate even a slightest deviation from the acceptable levels.

What are the benefits of fish oil?

For the want of time I will list down only few important ones here, because this is such a wonderful supplement that it can be used by any person at any stage of life. We as humans need omega 3 for fetal brain development, for better growth of our brain. Pregnant women need it for various issues like post partum depression, reduced labor pains.

In a study it was shown that people who are high in omega 3 are less aggressive and have better concentration abilities. Omega 3 is known for its anti inflammatory properties and is a brilliant medicine for treatment of many diseases like Arthritis, ADHD, Dyslexia, Biploar Disorder, etc.

How do you find the best fishoil from the surplus available in the market?

Let us keep it simple and use the filter criteria to reject first and then choose.
Reject the ones who do not publish a Certificate of Analysis. It is a must for every company that produces fishoil. You will get rid of more than 50% of worthless products.
On the label search for the phrase called molecular distillation – this is the process of removing toxins from fish oil. If a company is following any such process then they will for sure flaunt about it. And last but not the least check if product is reviewed as per the following standards — International Fish Oil Standards, Council for Responsible Nutrition (CRN), European Pharmacopoeia, and Norwegian Medicinal Standard.

To know more on effective fish oil supplements, visit my website where I have described the benefits of omega 3 in detail after personal experience. I assure you that once you and your family starts taking these supplements, there will be no looking back on the ailments.

Fish Oil And Anxiety – Are They Related?

Simple answer is yes, they are. I am not saying that if you don’t take fish oil and anxiety will attack you. But in most cases the deficiency of Omega 3 fatty acids had been listed as a major cause of anxiety.

Anxiety is nothing but a psychological state of mind in an individual. In this condition mood swings very rapidly without knowing the reason that triggered it. It can originate because of various factors like fear, worry, stress, discomfort, and nervousness. Anxiety can be accompanied by physical symptoms like sweating, heart palpitations, trembling, nausea, stomach aches, chest pain, trouble breathing, etc.

Our brain has numerous nerve cell membranes and membrane fluidity. Any change in levels of fluidity can affect our behavior and lead to anxiety or depression. Omega 3 fatty acids boost the healthy formation of these brain cell membranes and help us fight these occasional mood swings and bouts of depression.

It was observed in many researches that people suffering from anxiety have lower levels of DHA and EPA. Both these fatty acids are responsible for uninterrupted blood flow to brain. Lack of either one of them results in usage of some other fatty acids by the brain. Since these replacement fats are not meant for this job, we experience mood fluctuations and anxiety.
Fish oil being rich in both DHA and EPA, is beneficiary for proper functioning of brain, thus resulting in better memory, concentration and low levels of depression.

Fish oil and anxiety are related in a subtle way that if you are having a regular dose of fish oil you will be better able to fight the bouts of anxiety. In a study published in news paper recently, a set of 1000 people were exposed to uncomfortable situations one by one and those who were on a regular dose of fish oil supplements were better in coping up with the situation.

You must be very cautious while selecting your supplements. A bad quality can do more harm than good. Effective fish oil should be pure, have lower levels of toxins like mercury and lead, should not have any rancid odor and should smell like ocean water. Recent study proves that a mixture of oil from tuna and hoki fish doubles the anti-inflammatory properties; thus suppressing the mood swings.

Trust me on this – If you get regular anxiety attacks then consult your physician; start using a high quality fish oil and anxiety will be a thing of past for you. Visit my website to know more on omega 3 benefits and how to conclude on effective fish oil supplement.

How to Compare Fish Oils

If you compare fish oil, you will see that there are three basic kinds on the market. The one that has been around for more years than any other is the natural triglyceride form.

Triglycerides are a kind of fat, composed of three fatty acids and a glycerol or glycerin molecule. High triglycerides in the bloodstream are a risk factor for heart disease and other health problems, which is why we are told to limit our intake of dietary fats.

But, in the 1970s, researchers reported that the Greenland Eskimos had a very low incidence of heart disease (practically non-existence), even though their diets were very high in fat. The kinds of fats in their diets were primarily those found in fatty fish and seal meat.

That’s when researchers began to compare fish oils to other kinds of fats. They learned that the fats found in seafood were primarily omega-3 fatty acids; news that they shared with the public.

By comparison, the fats found in the typical American diet include a lot of trans-fatty acids, saturated fats and omega6 fats. And, the American incidence of heart disease is very high. It is still the number one killer of men and women of all races.

When you compare fish oil, you will also see the concentrated esters, which are also natural and readily available for use by the human body, but they have been distilled to remove contaminants such as mercury. The distillation process also makes the omega-3 concentration higher than it is in the triglyceride form.

But, there is reason to believe that the natural triglyceride form has more anti-inflammatory activity; that the distillation process removes some quotient of the oil that is beneficial to your health. That’s why there is another kind on the market. That kind is a 50/50 mix of natural triglycerides and concentrated esters.

The purpose is to provide the highest possible level of omega-3 fatty acids, while providing the highest degree of anti-inflammatory activity. So, when you compare fish oils, it’s a good idea to look for the 50/50 mix.

You may be aware that inflammation plays a role in arthritis and other painful conditions. But, did you know that it plays a role in heart disease and cancer, as well?

Many people are unaware of the toll that chronic inflammation plays on the body. One of the reasons that obesity is bad for the health is that fat cells burst and cause inflammation.

When you compare fish oils, you may notice that many manufacturers do not list the anti-inflammatory action as a benefit. That’s because they are not allowed to. In the US, if something has anti-inflammatory activity, then it is a drug and it must be regulated as such.

Dietary supplements and foods are regulated differently. If a manufacturer wants to make a health claim concerning a nutrient or a food, they must appeal to the FDA. Their appeals are often denied.

Make no mistake about it. Anti-inflammatory activity is not the only thing to consider when you compare fish oil, but it is very important. Don’t forget about it.
