Consuming Fish Oil To Help Your Blood Pressure Is One of the Smartest Things You Can Do

Let me assure you suffering from high blood pressure and cholesterol is no fun at all — I have been taking medication for both of these problems for many years.

It is probably too late for me to get off them now, however changing to a superior brand of fish oil supplements 6 months ago has helped reduce both my blood pressure and cholesterol level a little bit.

It is pretty much beyond doubt omega-3 DHA and EPA fatty acids benefit your body and mind in many ways.

None more so than by helping to improve arterial health by reducing triglycerides and balancing HDL and LDL cholesterol better. Naturally having an improved blood flow reduces our risk of getting blood clots from clogged arteries that can result in a heart attack or stroke.

Arguably the best way to get more fish oil in your diet is to eat oily fish 2 to 3 times a week.

Unfortunately this solution usually turns out to be easier said than done, we start out with good intentions of buying fresh fish each week but often don’t get around to it. Then of course there is the cost issue… 30 years ago fish was cheap to buy — but those days are long gone.

For many years now I have been taking fish oil supplements daily. However it’s only been in the last six months that I realized buying the cheapest ones, and not fully understanding the real issues has meant that I haven’t been getting the most benefits from taking them — which I should have got.

When I became interested in researching fish oil supplements I soon realized the amount of fatty acids in each soft gel is the most important ingredient. Also it became apparent that having almost double the amount of DHA to EPA omega-3 fatty acid ratio was equally as important.

Seriously think about consuming more fish oil, based on the hundreds of scientific and clinical tests conducted over the last few years, it’s pretty much beyond doubt omega-3 fatty acids are very beneficial in helping to control and improve both your blood pressure and cholesterol balance.

Not Taking Omega3 Daily? Find Out Why You Should

Taking omega3 daily is second nature to those of us who are already convinced of the numerous health benefits to be accrued. Some serious science is now coming forward and telling us that as a general rule, we’re not getting near enough of this essential fatty acid and the nutrients they contain. Nutrients that are essential.

The reasons why are not that difficult to work out when you see the explosion in obesity in our modern day society, and its related problems. What we’re eating are too many of the wrong things which, according to those in the medical world is changing our brain chemistry. Lack of these essential fatty acids in our daily diet is being talked about as a reason more people are suffering cognitive disorders, mood and anxiety swings, memory loss and even anti social behaviour in teenagers.

By taking omega3 daily, many have witnessed noticeable improvements in symptoms within the conditions just mentioned. I’ve even read about family doctors who have experienced seeing their own patients getting visibly better when told to include fish oils in their daily dietary regimen.

But, there are also other equally vital health areas where they are proving beneficial, like your heart, skin and even within pregnancy. The good news just keeps on rolling out, and I have even noticed favorable articles in many national newspapers and health magazines in recent times.

If you want to partake in taking omega3 daily your next step should be in trying to understand what factors determine a quality supplement. Not surprisingly as the market has expanded, it has resulted in a mind boggling array of choice and pricing. That last point is worth noting as that is not always a proper reflection of either quality or effectiveness.

True comparisons involve knowing something about what quality of fish oils are used, where they originate from, how well they are harvested and kept, how pure they are and the dosage per capsule.

Find one that ticks many or all of those boxes and you are on to a winner. But, look no more as I have done the looking for you, just follow the link to my main site to see what I’ve found. It’s often the little known about makers who come up trumps.

Find out more.

Strengthen Willpower to Eat Less

You’ve heard of exercising your muscles to lose weight. But how about exercising your willpower?

Picture it. You’re slim. You didn’t use to be slim. But you learned how to exercise your willpower. Now, you eat less. You can pass up the gooey chocolate dessert. You can eat a few crispy steak fries, then decide to quit. You have self control around food. And, you’re slim.

Research by Roy Baumeister at the University of Florida reveals that self control is like a muscle. This actually makes sense–we all know that self control can suffer from fatigue, like a muscle. Think of how hard it is to keep your patience, go to the gym, or resist comfort foods at the end of a long day. When you’re tired, self control is weaker.

But did you also know that self control can be developed and strengthened, just like a muscle? Challenge it a little, let it rest, and then challenge it again. Just as your quads grow stronger when you drop into a set of squats every day, your self control grows stronger with every little challenge.

Sounds great, but how exactly do you exercise and challenge your willpower? You can’t exactly pop your willpower onto the treadmill. Start by turning one distant, long-term weight-loss goal into many smaller, short-term eating goals, which are easier to achieve. For instance, if you’re faced with a snack attack, your short-term eating goal would be to eat some fresh fruit and try to hold out against the chips and cookies for, say, 15 minutes. When you make it through those 15 minutes eating only fruit, you’ve succeeded. You’ve also exercised and strengthened your willpower.

Willpower can also be boosted when it’s depleted: a short nap or rest, a small snack that includes some fresh fruit or whole grain carbohydrates, something that makes you laugh, or any other kind of “pick me up” that works for you.

Each food encounter we have during the day is an opportunity to strengthen willpower, just like a trip to the gym for your quads. If you need extra motivation to meet those individual food challenges with success, get some support. Over time your willpower will grow stronger, you’ll have more self control around food, and you’ll be slim–just like you pictured.

YoDiet is the personal trainer for your willpower. YoDiet’s YoCoaches call you frequently throughout the day, with brief, automated messages of support and to check in on your recent eating decisions. Each coach call acts to reduce a long-term weight-loss goal into a short-term eating goal, creating many opportunities for success

Extra Energy With Fat Burners – Phen375

When you think of fat burners like Phen375, you probably mainly think about what they will do to how your body looks. This makes a lot of sense as they are called fat burners and therefore your vision of them is for what they can do to the physical shape of your body. But there is one side effect of fat burners that you may like – energy.

First start
When you first start taking fat burners you may notice that you have a lot of extra energy, especially a little while after you take them. The reason for this is that the fat burners are upping your metabolism. The higher your metabolism, the more fat your body burns in it’s normal operations. The offshoot of this is that the increase in metabolism also revs your body up and gives you energy.

So, how can you use this energy? Here are a couple of options:

Upping Exercise – Why not double up what you are trying to do with the fat burners and help your body remove more of that extra weight you have tacked on. When you are taking a supplement like Phen375, you should note when your energy increase kicks in and make this the same time you go to the gym or start your workout schedule. This will help you see better results and possibly more stamina than in the past.

Competition Prep – If you are really getting into a workout and thinking of trying something like a marathon or other sporting competition, you may want to make sure your body is really able to do it. Well, your fat burners may be a way to test your body’s limits. Using the energy boost you can see how far/fast/long you can go as you prepare your body for competition day.

Vacation – Have you ever noticed how vacations are often more tiring than regular life? We are always on the go on vacations and usually are trying to see and do everything we can day and night. What you wouldn’t give for a little extra energy. Well, if you are taking a fat burner like Phen375, you can have that little boost of extra energy to let you do more and enjoy it all while you are away from home.

Staying Alert – Not all benefits of the extra energy from a fat burner like Phen375 are relating to physical activities. Sometimes you just need a little extra energy to stay awake and focused. This could be when you are making a long drive or need to be up all night studying for an exam.

While many people think fat burners are just meant to be a weight loss supplement, if you look at the bigger picture, you will be able to appreciate all of the ways they can help you get a little energy boost when you need it.

Choosing Foods High in Omega 3 – Top Tips to Help You Make the Best Choices for Your Health

Most people don’t realize this but there are a number of things to eat, both animal and plant, that are foods high in omega 3. But some have more of the important fatty acids, DHA and EPA, than others. Here’s a quick guide to omega 3 foods to help you choose.

Omega 3 fatty acids are vital for the proper functioning of the heart and brain, and can help prevent cancers. But our bodies cannot manufacture them. We must get all the fatty acids we need from our food.

You can get omega 3s by eating oily fish, grass fed beef and eggs from chickens fed on greens.

Plant foods high in omega 3 include walnuts, flaxseed, pecans, hazelnuts and soybeans.

But before you choose foods high in omega 3 from these lists you need to know a little about which types of fatty acids they contain.

The most important fatty acids are EPA and DHA. These have the greatest health benefits and are the ones you need to target in your omega 3 foods. EPA and DHA are mostly found in animal sources, such as fish.

ALA is another important fatty acid. Its benefit is that your body can use it to make EPA and the DHA. ALA is mostly found in plants, such as walnuts and flaxseed.

But our bodies are not very good at converting ALA to EPA. It’s a quite inefficient process – it requires about 11 grams of ALA to create just one gram of DHA.

Depending on what else you eat, the conversion process can get even worse. For example, if you eat a lot of margarine, bakery products or fast foods, you will be eating a lot of transfats, which interfere with the conversion of ALA to EPA.

Your age can be a factor too – the conversion process slows down even further as we get older.

So it seems that the foods high in omega 3 that will deliver the greatest benefits for your health are animal-based products. Fish oil is generally considered the best source as it is particularly high in DHA and EPA.

But it’s not all bad news for vegetarians and vegans. It is possible to find some microalgae products (seaweed) that have been produced in bioreactors to concentrate and increase their natural levels of DHA.

Eating animal foods high in omega 3 such as oily fish is an excellent way of increasing your intake of the crucial fatty acids but people sometimes find it difficult to eat enough fish each week to get a good dose.

It’s not only quantity though – you need to eat the right kind of fish, such as salmon, mackerel and tuna. Unfortunately, these fish are often caught in waters that are contaminated by heavy metals, PCBs and dioxins.

This is why it has become popular in recent times to take fish oil supplements instead. The oil in the capsules can be filtered and treated to remove all traces of impurities and contaminants. You can take as little as one capsule a day and experience great benefits for your heart and general health.

Getting A Multivitamin That’s Worth Taking

Bette Dowdell

A health-promoting nutritional supplement program builds its foundation on a good multivitamin/mineral. But not just the first one you lay your hands on. I recommend TwinLab Daily One Without Iron. Why? That ‘s what I’m here to discuss..

I pretty much don’t know how to be casual about my recommendations, so, after 30+ years spent studying the vitamins and minerals we all need, I spent days doing computer research on multi ingredients, then more days going to health food stores to read labels and talk to people. I had ingredient labels floating through my dreams.

To arrive at my recommendation, I matched what we need against what each multi offered.

I have no connection with the TwinLab company. I receive no compensation of any sort from them. I based my choice strictly on the merits.

So, what are the merits?

TwinLab enjoys a good reputation as a quality provider of nutritional supplements. I like that.

This multi offers significant amounts of minerals. Many multis come up short in minerals, which I don’t understand. Studies show we all need more minerals. People dealing with fatigue and endocrine problems REALLY need more minerals. I want a multi that packs a punch.

The minerals are  balanced, too. You can’t take minerals willy-nilly. For instance, zinc and copper have to hit a proper ratio to be a blessing and not a problem. And different forms of the minerals are preferable to others; this multi has good minerals. (More on that later.)

And my recommended multi has a simple formulation, another plus. It covers the basics well, with no frills. I like that. Today’s multis make me tense with their large array of herbs. We have very little solid research on individual herbs and NO research on combinations of herbs. Bunches of herbs create an unnecessary risk.

I’m not opposed to herbs. I take a few herbs, and I’m researching more, but throwing them in by the handful is nuts.

Simple, straightforward supplements acknowledge our uniqueness. We’re all different, our needs are different and we react differently to everything we take in. By keeping things simple, we can spot and fix problems pretty quickly.

I also like the idea of one pill getting the job done. Taking pills doesn’t make anybody’s top ten list of things to do, so having to take only one increases the chances it’ll happen. And one-pill adds flexibility. With a known problem of absorbing nutrients, I take two a day. And I’d build, say, a cancer patient up to three a day, for a while, to maximize the cancer-fighting components. So, you can ramp up without reaching overwhelming numbers. And the minerals stay in their proper ratios.

Never take a multi with iron. Long story. Just don’t do it. This multi has molybdenum, which does a lot of what iron does–plus adds a few benefits of its own–but without the risk.

As I said, this is the best multi I could find. But I can’t declare perfection.

I wish it had a different form of chromium. However, it does have a goodly amount of chromium, which significantly compensates.

I wish it included boron. Among its several talents, boron helps us absorb the minerals we get.

Finally, I wish it didn’t include soy lecithin. Soy gets me crazed. But my research says lecithin doesn’t wreak the havoc of most soy. Plus, it shows up near the bottom of the ingredient list, so there’s not much. Also, it’s in all the other multis of value, too. Sigh.

To sum up then, no other multi matches my positives, but all the other multis offer a bunch of negatives. Add the fact that TwinLab Daily One Without Iron is reasonably priced and widely available and you have it.

If I ever find something even better, I’ll let you know.

Confused about what vitamins and minerals you need? Not certain about what to look for in nutritional supplements? Bette Dowdell dug herself out of a really deep health ditch, and she wants to use her years of study to help you do the same. Don’t go dragging through life when you don’t have to. Bette’s e-book Pep for the Pooped: Vitamins and Minerals Your Body Is Starving For helps you build a solid health foundation–and takes you directly to the right brand, the best type, at the lowest price. Antibiotic-Resistant Disease Killing Humans and Swine

Health officials said the bacteria is being
transmitted to humans through pigs. The
increased use of antibiotics in agriculture may
be behind the spread of the resistant strain.

What are ESBLs?

Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) are
actually enzymes produced by certain types of
bacteria, which renders the bacteria resistant
to the antibiotics commonly used to treat them.

ESBLs were first discovered in the mid-1980s. At
the time they were mostly found in the
Klebsiella species of bacteria, in hospital
intensive care units. Until recently, few people
were affected by these mutated bacteria and it
didn’t appear to be a major growing concern.

That has changed, however. According to the
British Health Protection Agency (HPA), a new
class of ESBL (called CTX-M enzymes) has emerged,
which are now being widely detected among E.Coli
bacteria. These ESBL-producing E. Coli are
resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins, and
are becoming more frequent in urinary tract
infections.

Other species of bacteria that can now produce
ESBLs include:

K. pneumoniae
K. oxytoca
Salmonella
Proteus mirabilis
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
The Problem is Worse Than You Think!

According to a study published October 2007 in
the Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA), there were close to 100,000 cases of
invasive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) infections in the United States
in 2005, which lead to more than 18,600 deaths.

To put that number into perspective, HIV/AIDS
killed 17,000 people that year.

Antibiotic-resistant disease IS a major man-made
problem.

This was the study that propelled MRSA into the
news last year, combined with a number of school
outbreaks that took place around the same time.
Discussions focused largely on reducing medical
over-use of antibiotics, and proper hygiene such
as washing your hands with soap and water to
reduce the spread of infectious disease.

But little has been said about the rampant
over-use of antibiotics in agriculture, which is
a MAJOR source of human antibiotic consumption,
and hence increased antibiotic resistance.

Agriculture as a Source of Antibiotic Resistance

Both MRSA and ESBL are being traced back to
animals raised for food production, especially
pigs.

These animals are often fed antibiotics at low
doses for disease prevention and growth promotion.
Animals receiving antibiotics in their feed gain
4 to 5 percent more body weight than animals that
do not receive antibiotics, but the price is high
for you, the end consumer, because this practice
also creates the perfect conditions for antibiotic
resistance to flourish.

Denmark’s health officials claim they’re unsure of
how farmers and veterinarians, who have not
consumed infected meat, are becoming infected.
However, according to research cited on Johns
Hopkins website, the main reservoir of these
organisms is in the lower digestive tract, and
they can persist within the gastrointestinal tract
for months. So perhaps the answer doesn’t have to
be all that complicated.

So, the meat industry practice of using antibiotics
is indeed a driving force behind the development of
antibiotic resistance in a now wide variety of
bacteria that cause human disease.

The long stalemate on this issue constitutes a
struggle between strong science and bad politics.
The FDA finally banned the use of fluoroquinolones
– a widely used class of antimicrobials — from
agricultural use August 1997, but not without the
Bayer Corporation kicking and screaming in vehement
opposition. After all, antibiotics for livestock
use is big business. It constitutes about 70
percent of ALL antibiotic use! They couldn’t
replace that market with human consumers even if
they tried.

Other Agricultural Sources of Antibiotics

Another heavily tainted meat product you should stay
away from is conventionally raised chicken. A 2006
study published in the Journal of Infectious
Diseases found that bacteria from conventional
chicken and from people who ate the chicken became
resistant to Synercid, a strong antibiotic used to
treat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In essence, it
can cause resistance to the last lines of defense
currently available in the modern medicine cabinet.

It also found that it was rare to find resistant
bacteria among antibiotic-free chicken, while the
majority of bacterial isolates from conventional
poultry were resistant.

But, the ramifications of using antibiotics in
agriculture don’t end there. Antibiotics filter
down through the food chain in sometimes
non-suspecting ways.

Antibiotics are also being transferred, via
manure, into your food supply.

A 2007 study in the Journal of Environmental
Quality looked at whether food crops will
accumulate antibiotics from soil covered with
antibiotic-containing manure.

In a greenhouse setting, corn, lettuce and
potatoes were grown on soil that contained hog
manure with a commonly used veterinary
antibiotic added.

The antibiotics were absorbed by all three
crops, into both their leaves and tissue.
Meanwhile, the antibiotics also transferred to
the potato tubers, suggesting that root crops
like carrots, radishes and potatoes may be
particularly at risk of antibiotic accumulation.

These findings unfortunately also have
implications for organic farmers, who often use
manure as their main source of fertilizer. And,
as it stands, manure that contains antibiotics
is still allowed under the organic label.

How to Avoid Excessive Antibiotic Exposure

So how can you ensure that the food you feed to
yourself and your family is pure and healthy?

Apart from growing it yourself, your best option
is to get to know a local farmer near you — one
who uses non-toxic farming methods. If you live
in an urban area, there are increasing numbers of
community-supported agriculture programs available
that give you access to healthy, locally grown
foods even if you live in the heart of the city.

If you are looking for a safer alternative to
commercially raised beef please be sure to check
out grass-fed beef. Grass-fed cattle are not
routinely fed antibiotics. They may occasionally
receive them for an infection, but that would be
the rare exception, and even then they are only
used for a few days.

Healthy Living With Acai Drinks

Many of us looking at a diet for any reason have most probably heard of Acai, and the benefits of the Acai berry, it really is quite a unique fruit, and for a moment I would like to take a look at incorporating the Acai berry into your diet through an Acai drink. When you consume the Acai berry in a drink you are receiving 100% of its benefits, plus the ability to combine it with strawberry or guarana, or another fruit of your choice you are enriching the vitamins, minerals and nutrients found in an Acai drink and increasing your benefits.

The Acai drink is really quite simple to make and can be done is several ways, the method I like most is to blend it with crushed ice and add one of the mentioned fruits, this gives it a great texture and taste and I have also found that for building muscle this is a very effective way to consume the Acai berry. Acai drinks don’t have to be complex, but just adding a little flavor makes it tasty and enjoyable, and making an Acai drink of around 300ml per day is sufficient if you supplement it with your standard diet.

Now, I have mentioned the Acai drink for muscle building, however by diluting it a little to make you Acai drink not so strong it can be used for weight loss, assist with water retention and many other health benefits, and by increasing the amount of Acai in your drink you can also use it for weight gain – this is what makes the Acai, and the Acai drink ideal for any dieting method.

With the drink being simple to make, a the Acai berry becoming easier to source the Acai drink is something that has been overlooked and underestimated for by many, but if you stop and think for one moment, the popularity of the Acai drink in Brazil is immense, and look at not only the beauty of the Brazilians, but the health of their athletes – showing you that regardless of what you desire from your body the Acai drink, and the Acai berry can offer it to you.

Therefore I would encourage anyone and everyone that wishes to improve their body or lifestyle to take a closer look at the benefits of the Acai drink and how to obtain it and some tasty recipes to go with your Acai to make sure your Acai drink brings you taste, health and happiness everyday.
