How Vitamins Rebuild Bone: Osteoporosis

It is never too early to begin supplementing calcium and vitamin D for building bone mass.  Osteoporosis is a common problem among the elderly, but is totally preventable and treatable.  Women especially are at risk, because they can lose up to 5% of their bone mass every year for up to seven years after menopause.  With crippling fractures and death from complications of fractures on the rise, we need to be sure that we are letting people know how vitamins and supplements can help them prevent and treat osteoporosis.

Our bodies only build bone for the first 20-30 years of our lives.  After that, we begin to deplete the stores of calcium that we have.  We lose a lot of bone mass in our 30’s and 40’s.  Some people are already losing bone mass in their 20’s and are unaware of it.  Vitamins and supplements, diet and exercise are crucial to retaining calcium stores.

Your body constantly uses calcium to support your muscles, heartbeat, nerve function, and blood coagulation.  This calcium needs to be in your blood, so your body constantly takes it from your bones.  If you are not getting enough calcium in your diet, then your bones are quickly depleted and left brittle and porous.

Some people don’t understand just how serious osteoporosis can be.  You don’t have to fall down or have some sort of accident to break a brittle bone.  Brittle bones are a lot like porcelain lace and do not have the flexibility of healthy bone.  They are lacking the calcium that makes them hard.  They do not have the healthy living cells of normal bone that are responsible for repairing damage.  Bones can break and crumble with something as simple as a sneeze, bending over, or moving a kitchen chair.

Preserving and constantly replacing your bones stores is essential.  A normal person needs as much as five cups of milk every day to keep up with their body’s calcium requirement and you could need even more if you are pregnant, lactating, or in menopause.  Most people cannot keep up with this requirement, plus, most people can’t even absorb all of the calcium in dairy products.  Better sources of calcium include certain greens, beans and broccoli.  Eating enough of these foods every day is not likely to happen, so supplementing is highly recommended by doctors.

In addition to calcium supplements, you need vitamin D to help the calcium be absorbed.  Many people are unaware that they are vitamin D deficient.  Working indoors, using sunscreen, and relying on milk to provide vitamin D all contribute to becoming deficient.  It is extremely difficult to put vitamin D in milk.  Recent studies show that over 70% of milk samples do not contain nearly the amount of vitamin D that is printed on the label.  Since vitamin D is crucial for calcium absorption, most doctors urge patients to supplement with vitamin D and calcium together.

Other vitamins and supplements are important, too.  Magnesium is required to convert vitamin D into an active form and is also essential for shuttling calcium into the bones.  Magnesium usually comes from vegetables, but magnesium is depleted from soil over time, so vegetables now have less magnesium than we might have thought.

Talk to your doctor before you buy vitamins.  Taking the right combination of vitamins and supplements on a daily basis can help you to prevent and treat osteoporosis.  Remember that it is never too early to be concerned with your bone health, so talk with your physician today.

Choosing the Right Breast Implant

If you’re considering a breast augmentation, you’ve probably read enough to be confused about whether to choose saline implants of silicone gel implants. Your choice of breast implant will depend on your and your doctor’s decisions about what is best for your body. In this article, we’ll compare the different types of implants in use for today’s breast augmentation surgeries.

Saline Implants:
The majority of today’s breast augmentations are done with silicone rubber implants filled with saline. These are currently the only implants available in the US to women who seek cosmetic breast augmentation surgery. Saline implants are either round or teardrop shape. The round implant placed beneath the pectoral muscle or sub pectoral, is perhaps the most commonly utilized combination. The implant is flattened in its upper poles by the overlying muscle producing an appealing breast shape. Rotation of the implant, a potential problem with a teardrop implant is avoided with the round implant beneath the muscle. Teardrop implants are more likely to be utilized when the placement is on top of the muscle beneath the breast tissues or sub glandular. Sub glandular teardrop implants may produce more cleavage as they may be placed a bit closer to the midline, they are less likely to produce unusual breast movements as the pectoral muscles are flexed. Your choice will depend on your idea of the ideal breast shape and your doctor’s preferences.

Saline implants are constructed of a tough outer silicone shell with a saline solution inside. Saline implants also come in either a smooth or a textured variety. Textured saline implants were developed to encourage tissue adherence and to reduce the risk of capsular contracture. Some saline implants also come in an expandable variety in which the saline implant can be enlarged by adding more saline after surgery. The expandable implant allows the overlying tissues to gradually adapt to the new size and is often utilized in breast reconstruction or in cases of marked breast asymmetry. This type of saline breast implant is more expensive than traditional saline implants.

Silicone Gel Implants:
The first implants used in breast augmentation surgery were made of a variety of materials, but in 1964 a silicone rubber envelope filled with a silicone gel implant was utilized and quickly became the standard for breast enlargement. However, silicone gel has not been routinely used in breast augmentations since 1992, when they were banned by the FDA following reports of leakage that was thought to cause tissue diseases. In the years since, many studies have failed to confirm these concerns.

In the years since silicone implants were banned, the cohesive silicone gel implant was developed and is already in use in Europe and Canada and in clinical trials in the US. The difference between silicone gel implants and the original silicone implant is that the gels have a hard, multilayer silicone shell. Inside is a cohesive silicone gel that retains its shape if ruptured because of its consistency.

Saline filled implants may be expected to produce a breast enlargement that is warmer on a cold day, and more likely to demonstrate wrinkles than the silicone gel implants. Gel implants are cooler to the touch but have a consistency that feels much like breast tissue, gel implants are more likely to develop firmness with a constricting fibrous contracture of the scar tissue that forms around the implant . Until the US FDA approves the use of silicone gel implants for breast augmentation, only women who agree to participate in clinical trials can use them.

Your doctor will be an important resource for information and can help you answer any questions that you may have about which type of implant to choose. Once you’ve done your research, asked questions, and found a great doctor, you’re well on your way to enjoying fuller breasts and a more positive self image.

Useful Information Regarding Breast Augmentation

In today’s times we come across many women who have got envious busts by undergoing breast augmentation operations. So much so, that these women get very famous for their newly acquired assets and do not mind flaunting them. This leads to almost every woman think twice about breast augmentation. There are several doubts that are not answered properly by the newspaper articles and television programs that appear about the issue. This article attempts to answer the several questions that women may have regarding breast augmentation.

Breast augmentation is the scientific term for breast implant surgery. This surgical method involves the insertion of implants into the breasts in order to increase their sizes. Hence, the name breast augmentation surgery. Along with an increase in the size of the breasts, there could also be noticeable enhancement of the firmness and the rotundity of the breasts. However, it is needless to say that the surgeon conducting the operation must be a very qualified and skilful surgeon. Any problem with the operation could cause permanent and irreversible problems with the shape of the breasts.

In order to implant the material within the breasts, the surgeon must make an incision on the breasts. The incision is generally made below the breasts from where it would not be apparent later on. Skilful surgery could make the incision almost imperceptible after the operation. Very carefully, the implants are then inserted by the surgeon in a pocket-like cavity between the pectoral muscles (muscles of the chest) and the overlying tissues of the breasts. Special forceps are used to lift the cavity and insert the implants in them. Once this is done, the incision is closed by sutures. Cosmetic surgeons may be involved in order to reduce the possibility of scars.

Since the initial stages of the development of breast augmentation, even the material that is used for the implants has undergone a radical change. In earlier times, silicone was the prime implanting material that was being used. In order to implant silicone, a gel of silicone was filled within a capsule of the same material. But the medical fraternity was very quick to find out a serious issue with silicone gel implants – and that is, silicone gel implants can cause cancers in women. The Food and Drug Administration of the US hence never certified silicone gel as a transplanting material. By the early nineties the use of silicone as the implanting material was banned in most countries.

This led to the quest of another suitable implanting material – one which would have the flexibility of silicone and yet not prove harmful to the body in any way. Doctors got their answer in the form of saline gel implants. These contain gels of saline materials filled within a silicone capsule. The use of silicone capsule is made because it is necessary to maintain the rigidity of the implants. However, the silicone capsule used in the saline gel implants is almost harmless to the human body. Also, the silicone capsule used can adhere better with the tissues and the muscles that make up the cavity inside the breasts, which makes the implants more firmly implanted into the breasts.

In this way it was a long time before the proper implanting material was discovered. In fact, the surgical method of inserting implants into the breasts was developed much prior to the discovery of a suitable implanting material.

Women who are contemplating to go in for breast augmentation are faced with a difficult choice – whether to go in for round implants or tear-shaped implants. Here we try to objectively discuss the merits and the demerits of the two common implants in vogue today.

The round implants are round in shape, as the name suggests. That means they are circularly symmetrical. These implants are easy to insert, because they can be placed in any which way within the incision. For this reason, these implants and cheaper and also the augmentation surgery with round implants does not cost much. However, there are some shortcomings of round implants. The female breasts are not naturally round in shape. They are a bit flatter on the top while they are more curvaceous on the bottom. Due to this, the round implants could give an unnatural look to the breasts. Round implants will tend to make the breasts look round from top to bottom. This will not work for women who are not buxom. The breasts could look vastly out of proportion.

The second type of implants commonly used today is the teardrop shaped implants. These implants are designed to complement the natural shapes of the breasts. They are tapering at the top while they are round at the bottom. Due to this the surgeon needs to put them in very carefully. Any fault of the surgeon in making the implants will cause the woman to have ungainly asymmetrical breasts. Though these breasts look very natural, they do not come cheap. They cost almost twice as much as round implants, and even the surgery costs are higher.

The breast augmentation surgery does not take more than a couple of hours. Even the woman can be back to work in a week. This is goading more and more women to go in for augmentation.

But every woman thinking about breast surgery would need to know for how much time the effects of the augmentation would last. This would seriously depend on the biological and hormonal setup of the woman. It would also depend on whether the woman plans to become a mother again. Becoming pregnant could trigger hormonal changes that could interfere with the sizes and shapes of the breasts. Age also could make the implants lose their content. But such issues could be fixed with corrective surgeries. A healthy woman would need to have three to four corrective surgeries in her lifetime. So, any woman planning to go in for augmentation must also bear in mind that she would need to go in for the corrective surgeries also.

Is Red Meat Safe to Eat?

Eating red meat is an American past time. From the famous steak houses in the biggest cities to the classic backyard BBQ, from the ubiquitous cheese burger at any number of fast food restaurants to bacon rashers served at breakfast, from rump roast on Sundays to pork chops to Bolognese sauce to ham sandwiches-the list of traditional and celebrated means and ways to consume red meat are many. It’s associated with manliness, and is part of the country’s psyche in a way that it’s not anywhere else in the world. But rising obesity rates, the increase in deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer all prompt us to ask the question: is it safe to eat red meat?

A number of studies have been published within the last decade linking the consumption of red meat to an increased chance of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, lymphoma, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer. It has also been linked with an increased chance of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and hypertension. These studies range from conclusions drawn from a new study that examined 500,000 Americans in 2009 to the Nurses’ Health Study which began in 1976 and expanded in 1989 and has been tracking 238,000 dedicated nurse-participants.

Thus the conclusions should be obvious. But if you look closer at the data, you’ll see room for some arguments to be made in defense of red meat. For one, these studies make no differentiation between the kinds of red meat consumed. Whether it’s highly processed hot dogs or pasture fed, free range beef, it’s all lumped into the same category. It stands to reason that consuming red meat that’s been pumped full of steroids, anti-biotics, growth hormones and the like will have a more deleterious effect on your health than the healthiest of naturally grown and fed animals. However, this difference is not factored into the studies, despite the obvious disparity in quality.

Another factor that needs to be taken into account and which is considered by the authors of these studies is the effect that over-cooking has on the quality of the meat. Grilling, searing, or broiling red meat may cause heat-altered chemicals to appear known as heterocyclic amines (or HCAs) which may be carcinogenic if consumed often over time. Thus how you cook your food becomes incredibly important-well done can be a bad idea.

So what should one take from all this? Clearly consuming large amounts of red meat is dangerous. Consuming more than 5.5 oz of red meat/day puts you in the most at-risk group, though even 10 oz/week can slightly increase your risk of developing these diseases. What becomes clear is that moderation is vital, and that we should all seek to consume only the highest quality red meat possible, while also being careful with the manner in which it is cooked. Quality over quantity, and with an awareness that if you can swap in white meat? It might be worth it in the long run.

Discover How to Create the Right Weight Loss Mindset For Successful Weight Loss

Getting the right weight loss mindset for successful weight loss is not only a good idea it is an absolute necessity. The problem many people face when it comes to weight loss is that they learn how to eat and exercise differently but they never learn how to think differently and they end up sabotaging their plan.

This article will share the 5 steps you can use to build the right mindset for successful weight loss.

1. Find that burning desire. For many losing weight is a knee-jerk reaction. They jump in to a plan because they are feeling uncomfortable in their body but they never dig deep inside to find that true reason that living a healthy life is so important to them and before long they lose interest in their goal.  Find your heart felt reason to lose.

2. Build your belief on a daily basis. If you believe you can eat well and exercise to lose weight then you will but if this belief in your ability goes down you are likely to quit. Remind yourself every day that this goal is important and that you can do it.

3. Get… and stay… committed. It is easy to find that strong commitment at first but without continually feeding your commitment your enthusiasm will wane. Each day recommit to following your plan for that day.

4. Know that you are worthy of reaching your ideal weight. For many weight has been an issue in their life for so long that even though it makes them uncomfortable to carry the weight it also feels strangely familiar. Allow yourself to move to a new comfort zone and know that you are worthy of living lighter.

5. Frustration happens, be flexible. Chances are slim that all will go as planned as you work toward your goal. You will be handed a piece of cake at a birthday party and it will rain just as you are preparing to go for a walk. Those who learn to accept these frustrations and find ways to keep them from destroying their efforts are the ones who reach their goals.

You can create the right weight loss mindset for successful weight loss by building your desire, belief, commitment, self-worth and flexibility.

3 Must-Have Options to Treat Metatarsalgia ( Ball Of Foot Pain) and Other Foot Conditions

During those periods when pain in your feet stops you from your normal activities, there seems to be nothing to do, but to lie down. Apparently never-ending trips to the doctor, loss of work, immobility, and even gaining weight can all be side effects of persistent pain in your feet. Nevertheless, there are some viable options. Acupuncture, special massage therapies, high heel orthotics, and foot oils and creams can help your feet be relieved of pain for good.

Not only will your feet have fewer bone and joint issues such as metatarsalgia, but the fluid accumulation will subside so that sensitive nerve endings can heal and be calmed. Muscles of the feet are another major problem area for many people.. All three of these pain-relieving, all natural solutions will have you free from foot discomfort immediately.

Trying Needle Therapy Can Pay Off Big Time with Morton Neuroma

Acupuncture is the practice of inserting very thin needles into “chi”, a name for regions in the body to rejuvenate the energy and blood flow that has been distrupted due to overuse. With feet, this can easily happen with athletic activities, wearing high heels, and with certain foot conditions such as ball of foot pain and Morton Neuroma. Treatment for Morton Neuroma can begin with various acupuncture methods and massages to relieve tender nerves and help to start the healing process.

Acupuncturists practice a necessary art in that they are generally able to effectively remove chronic pain in the feet in their patients. In 90′s study reported in the journal “Acupuncture in Medicine”, they have found that electrical stimulation of the needles boosted blood flow to the affected regions and improved healing.

Trying Massage Therapy Can Speed Healing Time for Morton Neuroma

Healthy blood flow can be key when trying to heal problems of the feet. Massage therapies can help with metatarsalgia and aid in Morton’s Neuroma. These therapies are becoming very popular among sports therapists, and massage therapists, reflexologists, and physical therapists. By handling the bottoms of the feet with a gentle, sweeping motion, blood flow is restored to the feet instantaneously.

Explained by the American Massage Therapy Association, two great therapies involve specifically using the thumbs. Several therapies seem to work best, including the sliding rub and walking methods. With the first technique, the thumbs are positioned on the top of the feet and then move in a back and forth motion up and down. The second technique involves the thumbs being positioned on the bottom of the feet and are walked towards the toes while pressing steadily.

Trying these Natural Oils Can Help During Morton Neuroma

There’s no one smarter than Mother Nature when it comes to foot cures. Some of the most effective foot products have natural oils included to relieve, freshen, and augment blood flow. One such essential oil is menthol. Extracted from the leaves of the mint plant, once applied to the skin, menthol provides a cooling relief.

Two other substances used in foot products are camphor and eucalyptus. These compounds have similar benefits to menthol because they provide a cooling sensation and help to increase blood flow. Aloe also helps fight dry skin and cleanses feet while giving lubrication during massage therapy. For those who need their feet soaked in a soothing warm bath, Epsom salts help draw toxins out of the feet while decreasing swollen tissues.

One of the best ways to lessen foot pain caused by wearing high heeled shoes are high heel orthotics. These devices provide support for your arches and metatarsal areas, thus diminishing the stress on our metatarsals.

Whether you have metatarsalgia, are already using high heel orthotics, or need Morton Neuroma; get relief today by getting acupuncture treatment, seeing a massage therapist, and using products with essential oils.
