Health Coverage for Senior Citizens

Health insurance for retirees or senior citizens can be confusing, especially with so many options and requirements. However, health insurance is crucial for retirees. As you grow older, your health obviously becomes more of an issue; you may visit the doctor more, need to fill more prescriptions, or even receive in-home care. Before you retire, prepare for health insurance to ensure that you receive the best benefits.

The first step in planning your health insurance coverage in your retirement is to see if your employer offers insurance coverage after you retire. If the company does, you should certainly consider it. Look at the plan, the deductible, and the coverage. Many near-retirees believe that Medicare will cover their medical payments, but this is not always the case. With this sort of coverage, you will most likely receive better health care but at a more expensive cost. As a retiree, you will certainly have a health insurance budget to maintain, and you will have to decide if the cost of your employer’s insurance is too expensive.

If your employer does not offer coverage, Medicare will be an important and integral part of your health insurance if you are 65 years of age or older. Medicare works like traditional health insurance plans in that you have been contributing a small portion of every paycheck you earn into this plan. Once Medicare begins, you will make co-payments for office visits or treatment. Medicare will also cover the expense of certain medical equipment or needs.

However, Medicare did not cover a number of items that are typical of health insurance. The government recently updated Medicare and divided it into three parts: Part A, B, and C. Part A covers hospital care, such as home health care, hospital stays, and hospice care. This part does not require a premium. Part B covers the more routine medical expenses, such as office visits and laboratory tests, while Part C enrolls you into a fee-for-service or managed care plan that reduces your out-of-pocket costs. Despite these different options, Medicare restricts your coverage by not covering certain kinds of care or illnesses and diseases. Thus, there is also Medigap coverage, which helps fill in the gaps in health insurance that Medicare leaves. Medigap coverage differs from state to state and has different payments.

Beyond Medicare and Medigap, there are also long-term care insurance plans that you can buy. You often see these plans advertised on the television at very low prices. These plans can help cover the costs of a nursing home or home health care. With so many different options and limitations, if you are retiring soon, you should take a look at your budget and what you can afford as well as what sort of coverage you feel you will need.

Is Red Meat Safe to Eat?

Eating red meat is an American past time. From the famous steak houses in the biggest cities to the classic backyard BBQ, from the ubiquitous cheese burger at any number of fast food restaurants to bacon rashers served at breakfast, from rump roast on Sundays to pork chops to Bolognese sauce to ham sandwiches-the list of traditional and celebrated means and ways to consume red meat are many. It’s associated with manliness, and is part of the country’s psyche in a way that it’s not anywhere else in the world. But rising obesity rates, the increase in deaths from cardiovascular disease and cancer all prompt us to ask the question: is it safe to eat red meat?

A number of studies have been published within the last decade linking the consumption of red meat to an increased chance of breast cancer, colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, lymphoma, bladder cancer, and prostate cancer. It has also been linked with an increased chance of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and hypertension. These studies range from conclusions drawn from a new study that examined 500,000 Americans in 2009 to the Nurses’ Health Study which began in 1976 and expanded in 1989 and has been tracking 238,000 dedicated nurse-participants.

Thus the conclusions should be obvious. But if you look closer at the data, you’ll see room for some arguments to be made in defense of red meat. For one, these studies make no differentiation between the kinds of red meat consumed. Whether it’s highly processed hot dogs or pasture fed, free range beef, it’s all lumped into the same category. It stands to reason that consuming red meat that’s been pumped full of steroids, anti-biotics, growth hormones and the like will have a more deleterious effect on your health than the healthiest of naturally grown and fed animals. However, this difference is not factored into the studies, despite the obvious disparity in quality.

Another factor that needs to be taken into account and which is considered by the authors of these studies is the effect that over-cooking has on the quality of the meat. Grilling, searing, or broiling red meat may cause heat-altered chemicals to appear known as heterocyclic amines (or HCAs) which may be carcinogenic if consumed often over time. Thus how you cook your food becomes incredibly important-well done can be a bad idea.

So what should one take from all this? Clearly consuming large amounts of red meat is dangerous. Consuming more than 5.5 oz of red meat/day puts you in the most at-risk group, though even 10 oz/week can slightly increase your risk of developing these diseases. What becomes clear is that moderation is vital, and that we should all seek to consume only the highest quality red meat possible, while also being careful with the manner in which it is cooked. Quality over quantity, and with an awareness that if you can swap in white meat? It might be worth it in the long run.

Top Reasons Why Relationships Break Down

Who doesn’t want a relationship to last a lifetime? Yet despite the best of efforts, relationships do break. Here are the top reasons why relationships do not last.

Infidelity

No human being will appreciate and accept infidelity. Infidelity across both the sexes is treated as a major turn off. For instance former US president Bill Clinton’s famous fling with his secretary Monica Lewinsky only resulted in defaming the flamboyant President. Similarly, the current French First Lady Carla Bruni is looked down upon as a home breaker. From the poster boy of golf, Tiger Woods today has become the poster boy of a broken relationship. No matter how deep rooted and long they are, relationships can never withstand infidelity.

Psychic Disorders

Psychic disorders like aggressive behavior and phobias are again a major turn off for partners. Anger and depression of extreme nature tend to spoil the relationship. Mood swings as a side effect may sound funny but is also a major reason for break ups.

Behavioral Problems

Certain disturbing behaviors like stealing, impulsive lying or even hyper sensitivity can cause a break up. No individual can entertain or bear extreme negative behavior for the long term. Negative behavior hampers the growth and sanity of a relationship.

Strange Problems

Don’t we greedily read every word about the celebrities’ love lives and discussion about their partners’ sexual preferences? In the present time relationships have a lot to do with sexuality. If the partner is not smart enough to meet the expectations then couples call it quits. Women suffering with sexual disorders or men with erection problem fail to satisfy their partners. In such relationships, there are chances of infidelity and the relationship discontinues very easily. Do not join the ranks of those who lose out on lifetime relationships for flimsy reasons. Keep your wits about yourself to make yours last, always and forever. Keep a lookout on this space for more reasons why relationships don’t last in the real world.

Natural Fast Weight Loss Secret #4 – Slim, Toned People Believe They Deserve Only Quality Food

You know, when you feel quite good about yourself, meaning that despite knowing that you’re about as flawed as every other human being, you nevertheless respect yourself and have a desire to treat yourself with the same consideration you treat others, it’s almost impossible to actually pick up a “rubbish” piece of food and put in your mouth.

This is the everyday experience of someone who is naturally slim and toned. So what gets in the way of YOUR having this experience also? What gets in the way is 3-fold: cravings (which can drive you to do things you’d rather not), emotions (such as eating because of boredom, or loneliness), and sometimes ignorance or a lack of deservedness around food (not actually knowing or realising that a particular “food” is not fit for human consumption).

This particular secret is about deservedness. Oftentimes I’ve begun to work with people who are overweight or even morbidly obese and the issue of self-esteem or self-respect has reared its head right from the start, and this is tied in very strongly to a sense of shame. I find this type of thinking especially popular in people looking for fast weekly diets. It can be quite a challenge to help my client to see that feeling ashamed of being overweight is about as illogical as feeling ashamed because he or she has chicken pox, or a cold.

And even more challenging to help them believe they have the right to exist without shame or guilt. Don’t get me wrong – it’s not that I believe that “big is beautiful” or even that fat is OK. No way! Overweight is crippling every health system in the civilized world! But overweight IS an “accident” or an “illness” that no-one develops deliberately, and therefore should NEVER be subject to guilt or shame. It is totally illogical to think that someone can “cure” their overweight by willpower and that they should be ashamed for not trying hard enough, for instance.

This is as insane as saying someone can cure their influenza by willpower. This type of thinking is counterproductive to naturally losing weight fast. In addition, guilt and shame are traumatic feelings that do a lot of damage, and can often lead to massive over-eating in an attempt to self-comfort. Often this happens in one week diets, and other weekly diets. Sadly, current government health initiatives, aimed at nagging people into more healthy lifestyles, and also dangerous shows like “The Biggest Loser”, have unleashed a TIDAL WAVE of guilt and shame that have led to not only more obesity, but also to a TIDAL WAVE of eating disorders amongst children, thousands of whom are dying of diseases like anorexia or bulimia.

Take a look at the free reports here to see what I mean. Here’s where you’ll learn how to naturally lose weight fast.

So the guilt and shame have got to go, and must be replaced by authentic feelings of self respect, and a sense of deservedness. Every human being has the right to healthy food. Every human being has the right to healthy play time. Every human being has the right to love. These are things that effortlessly slim, toned people recognize in every cell of their body.

Ways To Fit Your Wardrobe Despite Christmas Fat

Christmas is a time of excess; we all know it and most of us embrace it. After all, it’s the only time of the year where you feel positively encouraged to eat chocolate for breakfast and have a glass of booze in your hand at practically all times. The only problem is that once Christmas is over, we’re all left to face the damage of over indulging and it can be a very discouraging way to start the cold weeks of January.

If you’ve found that Christmas cheer has encouraged you to pack on a few pounds and that your trousers are smiling – an endearing saying from the Marines that refers to the way too-tight smart trousers gape at the pockets and pull the fabric across the groin into a smiling effect – then you’ll be looking for ways to minimise the damage.

Start off by cutting back on your incomings, that shouldn’t be too hard in January, when everyone is too strapped for cash to enjoy their normal treats anyway. Also look for small ways in which you can make changes for the better. For example, swap sugar in hot drinks for sweeteners – you’ll barely be able tell the difference – eat an apple first thing instead of starting the day with a sugary cereal bar, brave the cold and walk to work or to do the shopping, and make sure you have a stash of fresh vegetables in your fridge for snacking on.

When you’re trying to lose weight, make sure you get a good night’s sleep. No, this isn’t you being lazy, a proper sleeping schedule gives your metabolism time to regulate, meaning it’s needed if you’re planning on upping your exercise regime and controlling your diet.

While the beginning of the year is traditionally a time for cutting back and making new diet and fitness resolutions, there are a couple of ways you can avoid the dreaded smiling trouser look merely by being clever with your wardrobe until you’ve had a chance to drop a few pounds and get back to your normal weight.

Why not slip into a forgiving pair of jeans? Or make sure you don’t tuck in your shirt or jumper for the next few weeks. If all else fails, you could always refuse to take your coat off inside. The thing to keep hold of, though, is the fact that there are plenty of people in the same boat as you and that the leaner winter months will probably see you – and your trousers – back to normal soon enough.

Fish Oil for Cats – Discover The Secret To Keeping Your Cat Healthy and Happy

Despite all the adverts telling you how lucky your kitty will be to have the latest cat food, the truth is they are lacking in essential omega 3 fish oil for cats. This is one of the best natural substances and helps with a range of conditions, so here’s how they will benefit and how to ensure you get the right one.

One of the fish oil for cats main benefits is its anti-inflammatory properties which help to significantly reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes while being an excellent treatment for arthritis.

They are proven to enhance the immune system, protect against cancer, help avoid mental conditions and depression and help to lower any dangerously high cholesterol levels which can lead to premature death.

They are also exceptionally good for healing those hairless dry, irritated areas and encourage the hair to grow back and promote all round good health.

For older cats a daily fish oil can really help to improve their mobility, especially as arthritis is so common as they age. After just a matter of weeks they can be jumping and moving around like a much younger cat!

Remember that us humans can get all these benefits and more from the right oil as well, and there is no need to buy special fish oil for cats as the ones we use tend to be much more effective and more pure.

The key to finding the right one is to look for high DHA levels as it is this omega 3 fatty acid and not the other main one, EPA, which provides most of the benefits. I would recommend a minimum of 250mg of DHA per capsule.

If the fish oil for cats is not proven to come from a pure source, then a distilled oil is essential to make sure your kitty doesn’t ingest any harmful toxins from the fish like lead and mercury.

The best oils at the moments come from a blend of pure Hoki and distilled Tuna oil as they have over twice the anti-inflammatory properties of standard ones.

It is easy to just cut open a capsule (one a day and not the two recommended for us) and pour onto their food, and the fishy taste is unlikely to put them off!

I hope you can now see the incredible benefits to be had from giving your cat a daily fish oil and how it can really improve their well-being and help them to have a healthy, happy and longer life.

Vitamins for Depression

Depression exhibits itself in varying forms.  Depressive disorders are serious and symptoms should be regularly reported to a health care professional.  Severe depression may require medication and/or therapy to be managed, but certain vitamins can help to reduce the intensity and frequency of some symptoms.  Mild depression has similar symptoms to severe mood disorders, but they are generally less severe.  Vitamins and supplements that combat the underlying causes of depression symptoms have been very effective in lessening and even reversing depression.

Mild depression is often characterized by anxiety, obsessive thoughts or actions, lack of interest in activities that the person used to enjoy, mood swings, and a general blue mood.  Changes in your lifestyle, diet, relaxation practices, a regular amount of sleep, and supplementing with certain vitamins and minerals can improve the symptoms of mild depression and help you get your life back.  Do some research about your specific symptoms and talk to your doctor before you buy vitamins and supplements.

It is important to keep in mind that vitamins and exercise may not solve all of your problems.  Some neurological symptoms may be genetic and therapy and/or medication may be necessary to find relief.  However, many vitamins work directly on the neurotransmitters that are affected by these genetic abnormalities and can still be an effective form of treatment.  Work with your doctor or therapist because you should not try to combat depression alone.  With that said, let’s take a look at which vitamins may be able to help you and why.

Vitamins, such as vitamin D, have proven very useful in combating depression.  Vitamin D3 is the more active form of vitamin D and has proven to be helpful in treating mood disorders.  Vitamin D is often called the “sunshine vitamin” because our bodies normally produce it when exposed to the sun.  However, a lot of things can hinder our production of vitamin D and more people than ever are deficient, despite their sun exposure.

Inadequate levels of B vitamins can cause the nervous system to malfunction, causing many depression symptoms to worsen.  B vitamin deficiencies also hinder red blood cell production and the delivery of oxygen to the brain, leading to depression and fatigue.  Serotonin production is also hindered by low B vitamin levels.  B vitamin deficiencies are most common in patients with severe psychiatric problems.  The nervous system and serotonin levels are also hindered by a lack of thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron, selenium, vitamin C, and folate.

Many vitamins and minerals have a role in maintaining a healthy mental state, but none so much as vitamin C.  Vitamin C facilitates the production of acetylcholine, which has a calming effect on all of the body’s processes.  It is also necessary for your body to make serotonin, which is used in regulating anxiety levels, as well as making it possible for you to get recuperative sleep.  Vitamin C clears out toxins that affect neurological transmitters and that cause mass inflammation and oxidative stress.  It protects all of your cells from damage and invasion, but particularly your brain tissues.

Discuss your symptoms with your doctor before you buy vitamins.  A supplement regimen should start with the best vitamin C so that your body can properly synthesize the other vitamins and supplements that your doctor recommends.

Is a Prescription Fish Oil Really Necessary?

Recently I have heard a lot of people talking about prescription fish oil, and all of the benefits that it provides to both the body and mind.  I was curious to see what all of the fuss was about, because having done a lot of research myself on the many benefits of fish oil I thought that some company had somehow been able to come up with a miraculous new breakthrough.  Why else would the EPA approve the product?

I am still curious as to exactly why this company received special treatment from the FDA, when companies selling you the same product and conducting the same sort of clinical studies failed to get their DHA omega 3 fish oil formulas approved.  The truth is that despite the claims being made about this FDA approved fish oil it will not do any more for you than any of the other formulas on the market will.

Prescription fish oil is being touted as the only FDA approved product that is proven to reduce triglyceride levels.  Any fish oil supplement that you buy over the counter will do this as well, along with lowering your blood pressure, slowing your heart rate, reducing heartbeat irregularities (arrhythmias), preventing the formation of plaque on the arterial walls, and preventing blood platelets from sticking together and causing clots.

It is also claimed that that by following the FDA standards for allowable levels of toxins in their fish oil that this prescription formula is safer for you than the DHA omega 3 fish oil supplements on the market.  To be honest with you the FDA allowable levels for mercury and other toxins far exceed the International Fish Oil Standards that most of the companies manufacturing dietary fish oil supplements follow.

It is also claimed that prescription fish oil provides concentrated levels of DHA and EPA so high that it could take 14 capsules of over the counter fish oil supplements to equal the dosage in 4 of the prescription pills.  If you have read the labels of the majority of fish oil supplements you will know that 14 is a grossly inflated number.  In most cases you would have to take 6 at best, and once I break down the price per capsule I think that you would rather opt for the 6 instead.

Each capsule of this FDA approved fish oil costs roughly $1.31, so four capsules per day would cost $5.24.  The highest rated over the counter fish oil supplement costs roughly .29 cents per capsule, which at 6 capsules per day would cost you $1.74.  If you want to pay 3 times as much per day in order to receive exactly the same benefits then be my guest, but it doesn’t make much sense.

Of course, most health insurance will probably pay the bulk of the price for prescription fish oil, but depending on what your co-pay is it might just be easier to pick up the bottle of DHA omega 3 fish oil that sells for $16.85 a bottle.  Then you wouldn’t have to go through the hassle of picking up prescriptions, and waiting for them to be filled.

My conclusion, prescription fish oil is not all that it is being made out to be anyway.

Learn about the Benefits of Taking Fish Oil Daily

If you haven’t yet learned about all of the benefits that can be yours by simply taking fish oil every day, then you might want to take a couple of minutes to read what I am going to say.  After many decades of studying the healthy effects that omega 3 fatty acids have on the body we have discovered that these essential nutrients prevent more problems that any other natural substance you can take.

The studies began when scientists became curious as to why Eskimos enjoyed vibrant health, despite eating a diet that was incredibly high in fat.  These natives enjoy a diet that is rich in fish, seal oil, and whale blubber, yet show no signs of cardiovascular disease.  The studies conducted focused on the cardiovascular health of the Eskimos, but it is also interesting to note that these people are also virtually cancer free.

What the scientists discovered is that the DHA and EPA omega 3 fatty acids the food sources of the Eskimos provided seemingly canceled out the effects of the high fat content in their diets.  These essential nutrients kept cholesterol levels low, and prevented the formation of plaques along the artery walls among other things.  You could receive these same benefits by taking fish oil every day.

Some of the other heart healthy benefits that were noted were lowered blood pressure and heart rate, a reduction in the incidences of potentially fatal arrhythmias, and a lower risk of blood clots.  Supplementing your diet with fish oil will also help to alleviate circulatory problems such as varicose veins and Reynaud’s disease.  Reynaud’s disease is a vascular disorder that affects blood flow to the extremities.

Taking fish oil offers benefits to any chronic inflammatory illness, such as arthritis, gout, asthma, allergies, and inflammatory bowel syndrome.  DHA and EPA omega 3 fatty acids help to control adult onset diabetes by reducing insulin resistance, which leads to diminished glucose uptake and metabolism.  These nutrients also boost insulin secretion, which aids in regulating blood sugar levels.

These omega 3 fatty acids also play a role in cognitive development, membrane function, and membrane fluidity.  It is due to changes in membrane fluidity that mood disorders and behavioral problems occur.  High blood levels of DHA lower the risk of developing depression, aggression and hostility, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, dyslexia, and dyspraxia.

Taking fish oil can improve your health in so many different ways that it would be really hard to find an excuse not to take it.  If you want to live a healthier life, then I suggest that you begin a regimen of consuming a high quality DHA omega 3 fish oil every day.  Make sure though that the manufacturer supplying your product will offer you proof of the purity of the formula, because some of the formulas on the market are questionable.

You have nothing to lose by taking fish oil, but so much to gain.  The cost of the supplement is incredibly reasonable in most cases, and it is a small investment that will reap huge rewards.  You owe it to yourself to make the decision to buy.

What is Fish Oil for Anyway?

What is fish oil good for?  That seems to be the question of the day.  The supplement is among the most popular in the US, topped only by the daily multi-vitamin.

Despite all of that popularity, there are still many people that are unaware of the benefits.  If you happen to be one of them, this article is for you.  But, first, let me give you just a little advice about choosing a good supplement.

Regardless of what kind of supplement you are taking, whether it is a standard multi-vitamin or an herbal extract, it is important to find out what steps the manufacturer takes to insure purity.

When we are talking about herbs, the impurities in question are herbicides and pesticides.  We have enough inadvertent exposure to those things.  We don’t need them in a medicinal remedy.

When it comes to multi-vitamins, the most common contaminants are unwanted ingredients, like artificial preservatives, colors and flavorings.  Those things may be found in fish oil supplements, too.  But, mercury and PCBs are the major concern.  The toxins are in our oceans and our fish.  Obviously, they could be in the oils, too.

Now, that we have covered that.  What is fish oil good for, anyway?

There are benefits for any inflammatory condition, including arthritis, inflammatory bowel, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, eczema, psoriasis and acne.  The manufacturers are not allowed to say that the supplement is useful for treating those conditions, because, in the US, that would make it a drug.

There is one FDA approved drug for the treatment of very high blood triglycerides that contains only omega-3 fatty acids derived from fish oil.  Many doctors question the practicality of prescribing the expensive drug, when supplements are just as effective.

Here’s another question that many people ask.  What is fish oil good for, when it comes to heart health and why?

The supplements have been shown to lower blood triglycerides.  High triglycerides are a risk factor for heart disease.  They have anti-coagulant activity like aspirin, but without the aspirin side effects.  They have been shown to have a modest effect on hypertension or high blood pressure and they improve a person’s blood level of “good” HDL cholesterol.  They relax the smooth muscles, prevent blood platelets from adhering to the arterial walls and reduce chronic inflammation, which plays a role in atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries.

So, what is fish oil good for when it comes to the heart and circulatory system?  It’s good for pretty much everything.  It helps to correct the problems caused by unhealthy dietary fats and modulates the effects of the aging process.

The supplement is also good for firming the skin, weight management, infertility issues and depression, among other things.  It provides essential omega-3 fatty acids that are largely missing from the modern-day diet.

Hopefully, this article answers most of your questions.  Just remember to evaluate the supplement carefully before you buy it.  What is fish oil good for if it contains contaminants?  It’s not good for anything.
