The Truth About Fish Oil and ADHD

The topic of fish oil and ADHD has been often discussed lately in the news, magazines and on the internet.  By the time you finish reading this, you’ll have a better understanding of how the use of fish oil impacted a group of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and also why fish oil and ADHD are so often used together in the same sentence.  From the findings of this research you will be able to draw your own conclusions on whether fish oil is an effective means of treating ADHD and if it is a course of action you would want to take in your own life either with yourself, or a loved one.

ADHD has perplexed many researchers, doctors, behaviorists, therapists and dietitians for decades.  It has received growing attention in recent years as the estimated number of affected children has been estimated to be 3-5%.  Most notably, the condition has reached epidemic proportions with American children.  It is thought that ADHD is caused by low levels of the brain chemical dopamine, and that if levels of this chemical could be restored either by synthetic or natural means, the condition could be reversed or at the very least, controlled.  Ritalin has been the preferred method of treatment for many doctors over the years, and its effectiveness has been attributed to increased dopamine levels the medication causes.

I will refer to something called the AA/EPA ratio in the next few paragraphs.  Essentially what this measures is the ratio of the harmful omega-6 acids to the beneficial omega-3 acids.  The lower this number is for a person, the better.  It has been found that many people with brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, dyslexia, stroke and multiple sclerosis have higher ratios than those that don’t, leading doctors and researchers to believe that omega 3 deficiency and higher levels of omega 6’s in the diet is the cause, or at the very least a contributing factor for many of the brain disorders and chronic conditions we see today.  Such findings are directing many in the medical profession to pay closer attention to the subject of fish oil and ADHD.

Researcher Dr. Barry Sears and colleague Rene Espy engaged in a research experiment where a group of children with ADHD were given high doses of fish oil (10-20 grams) while simultaneously controlling insulin levels in all children for eight weeks.

The results were astounding.  After a period of only a few weeks, it was noted that “these children’s ability to concentrate increased dramatically” (Sears 145).  It was also noted that there were “positive changes in behavior both in school and at home” (Sears 145).  The children’s blood was measured at the start of the experiment and it was determined that the average AA/EPA ratio was around 22.  It should also be noted that Japanese children have AA/EPA ratios of around 1.5.  Why the comparison to Japanese children?  The reason is because Japanese children have a much higher intake of omega 3’s from fish in their diet than their American counterparts, and the average AA/EPA ratio for them is 1.5.

After the eight week experiment the children’s blood was measured again and it was found that the average AA/EPA ratio was as low as 3, leading the researchers to believe the reduction in ADHD symptoms of lack of concentration and poor focus were directly due to the high levels of fish oil used in the diet.

Dr. Sears also noted that at the end of the eight week experiment, most of the children resorted back to their old eating habits, stopped taking fish oil, and then rapidly deteriorated back to their previous conditions.

The findings demonstrated that a lower AA/EPA ratio is achieved by reducing omega 6’s in the diet, and increasing omega 3’s via fish oil.  The conclusions to draw from this experiment are that a lower AA/EPA ratio is likely responsible for a reduction in ADHD symptoms and that if the fish oil was to be continuously administered every day, the symptoms of ADHD would either be more manageable or nonexistent.

These results beg the question:  If the children continued on the regimen beyond the eight week trial, would the benefits have persisted?

So, what’s your goal?  Your goal is to determine where you stand on the topic of fish oil and ADHD. Also, to use this information to determine if using fish oil could possibly improve your quality of life or the quality of life of a loved one by reducing or eliminating the effects of ADHD.  Although the experiment is far from conclusive, the results are astounding and shed tremendous light on the miracle of fish oil in the treatment of ADHD.  It should also be noted that there have been many similar experiments conducted with comparable results.

Selenium for Virus Protection and Thyroid Function

Selenium deficiency often goes untreated because it does not create any noticeable symptoms. A certain amount of selenium is needed to protect the body from viruses and to promote healthy thyroid function. Research is being done and shows promise in using selenium to treat HIV and AIDS, allergies, flu, chronic fatigue syndrome, strokes, arthritis and more.

Selenium helps to regulate thyroid hormones and also supports the immune system. It helps to create antioxidants that clear out and protect cells from free radicals. Selenium deficiency is thought to trigger viruses into attacking and reproducing. Studies are being done to test the theory that selenium deficiency is the trigger for the HIV virus (among others) to switch from dormant into active status. It is believed that viruses switch into action when they need to visit more cells in search for more selenium. It is also believed that appropriate selenium levels slow down the HIV virus replication process.

Selenium is critical for thyroid hormone metabolism. It is part of the enzyme necessary for conversion of T4 hormone into the active form T3. Low selenium levels can lead to thyroid damage and hypothyroidism. However, high levels can do the same thing. Therefore, if you have thyroid issues, it is extremely important to monitor your thyroid function along with your dietary intake of selenium. A skilled physician or nutritionist will help you adjust and determine the right dosage of vitamins and supplements required for your thyroid to function at its best level.

We get selenium from whole grains, some seafood, most meats, and nuts. The amount of selenium we get from grains and nuts depends on the selenium content of the soil that they were grown in. The content of selenium in meat depends on the amount present in the plants that the animals fed on. Levels of selenium in soil vary so much from region to region that it is very hard to tell how much we are actually getting.

Brazil nuts have an unusually high amount of selenium, as much as eight hundred times the daily requirement per ounce. If you do eat Brazil nuts, do so in moderation and watch for side effects of having too much selenium in your diet. Hair loss, horizontal white streaking or blotching of the fingernails, garlic breath, gastrointestinal disturbance, fatigue, irritability, and flushing of the face are signs of too much selenium.

The anti-viral, antioxidant and antibiotic properties of selenium make it useful for maintaining a healthy immune system and is thought to help prevent heart disease and certain cancers. Depletions can occur when you have gastrointestinal problems that cause selenium not to be absorbed. Selenium is also destroyed in foods that are processed or refined. This can lead to autoimmune problems and thyroid problems.

Talk with your doctor if you plan on supplementing with selenium before you buy vitamins. A vitamins and supplements regimen should be discussed with a health care professional familiar with your health history and current medications to avoid drug interactions or unwanted side effects.

Why Are Fish Capsules Better Than Eating Fish?

Your presence here indicates that you are a health conscious person and you are aware of the omega 3 fats and their benefits. But currently you are confused on the right choice of source and are looking for answer to the question that what is better — eating fish or taking fish capsules? You are not alone, there are millions out there pondering upon the same question.

Intake of fish capsules is any day better than taking fishes to bridge the gap of deficiency of omega 3 fatty acids in our body. Let us go back a bit and start from basics to understand how.

DHA and EPA are two forms of omega 3 fatty acids that are readily absorbed by our body. Both of them are essential for functional growth of various parts like brain, nervous system, etc. Since neither of them is produced within our body, we have to depend on our diet to avoid their deficiency.

Fishes are rich source of DHA and EPA. Because ocean water is polluted with various chemicals, fishes inside them are also not spared. They are full of toxins like PCBs, Dioxins, lead, mercury, etc. Even farm fed fishes are also not uncontaminated as the pellets fed to them are partly made from tainted fish.

Thus, the safest choice is to shift to fish capsules. These capsules contain fish oil. Fish oil as the name suggest is the oil extracted from the tissues of healthy, fat and oily fishes. So it is rich in DHA and EPA.
Just filling the capsules with the fishoil, does not make them good for use. There are many important processes that should be followed while processing the fish oil so that it is pure and effective.

Salient feature of effective fish capsules –

1. They should be highly concentrated and should have higher percentage of DHA as compared to EPA. A soft gel should contain 280mg of DHA and 120 mg of EPA for the maximum rewards.
2. Oil in them should have under gone molecular distillation process. This process not only reduces the levels of toxins in the oil but also results in an end product that is of pharmaceutical grade.
3. They should not have any foul smell, instead should smell like ocean water. You can be sure of presence of any artificial fragrance in them by cutting a soft gel and putting it to smell test. If you are able to identify fragrances like lime – beware, the oil is not fresh. Simply discard it.

Since all the products available in the market are effective, be aware of the cheap ones. They can do more harm than good.

Discover the Benefits Associated with Fish Oils and Depression

I was concerned when I heard that many doctors are missing the boat by not advising their patient as to the proven benefits associated with fish oils and depression.  It seems as though whenever you visit the doctor for any reason, they are quick to want to prescribe some sort of chemically based drug to you in order to treat the problem.  None of the formulas designed to treat ailments such as depression are without their side effects though.

It seems as though no medical professional is willing to even discuss the findings of thousands of clinical studies that point out that a high level of DHA omega-3 fatty acid is just as effective at treating depression and other mood disorders as the medication currently being prescribed.  The only difference between fatty acids and those prescription medications is that fatty acids do not present any risk.

The connection between fish oils and depression is cemented in the fact that so many studies have proven that the cause of depression and other mood disorder stem from a deficiency in DHA omega-3 fatty acids.  It has been shown that low levels of DHA in the frontal cortex of the brain can cause a lot of things to happen, with depression, aggressive behavior, hostility, and suicidal tendencies topping the list.

Why is it that so many people nowadays suffer from lowered levels of DHA, and omega-3s in general?  A lot of it has to do with what is in our diet.  DHA is an essential fatty acid, and although the body can produce some DHA by deriving it from EPA, it is much more efficient for us to obtain our DHA through the foods that we eat.  This is where we run into problems.

The connection between fish oils and depression may have come to the forefront specifically because of our diets.  We have moved away from the healthy, natural, omega-3 rich foods that we used to eat, and instead now subsist on vast amounts of foods containing soy, corn, palm, and cottonseed oils.  The consumption of soy oil alone has increased a thousand-fold over the last 100 years.

What this has done is totally throw the balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids out of whack.  We are consuming far more omega-6 fatty acids now than omega-3s, and this is very bad.  While we need both types of omega fatty acids and the inflammation that they cause in order to have a strong immune system, omega-6s produce far more inflammation than the body needs, which can be harmful.

Omega-3 fatty acids balance out the harmful effect that can be caused by unchecked levels of omega-6s.  Your levels of omega-3 fatty acids will ideally be higher than those of omega-6 in order to prevent the diseases caused by chronic inflammation.  Low levels of DHA omega-3 fish oils and depression will be remedied once a DHA rich omega-3 dietary supplement is added to your diet.

Make no mistake about it, the connection between fish oils and depression has been made and omega-3 fatty acid fish oil supplements are the answer to all of your problems.

Information about vitamin b12

One should have the information that the vitamin b12 is a water soluble vitamin which plays an important role in the functioning of the brain and the nervous system along iwth the production of the blood in the body. Scientifically vitamin b12 falls eightth in the list of vitamins. It is found in the metabolism of the body cell effecting dna synthesis and regulation along with fatty acid synthesis and energy produciton in the human system.

Vitamin b12 belongs to the category of chemically related compounds having the activity of vitamin. One will find the vitamin b12 as most complicated vitamin in the market carrying biochemically hardly found element named cobalt in it. According to biosynthesis the structure of vitamin is generally accomplished by bacteria scientifically. Another form of vitamin b12 named cyanocobalamin is not found naturally but it is usable in pharmaceuticals, supplements, and in food additive because of its stability adn cheaper price in the market . So any consumer can intake vitamin b12 as per one’s requirement. Once this vitamin b 12 enters the body it shows its physiological forms such as methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin releasing the cynide from the body.

The occurence of vitamin b12 is quite interesting as it has relation iwth the disease called pernicious anemia, which damages the parietal cells from the stomach helping in the secretion of intrinsic factors in the body. In the body absorption of b12 by intrinsic factor is very important and once there is a lack it results in causing vitamin b12 deficiency in the person. There are several ways one can use vitamin b12 in daily life such as b12 belongs to cobalt consists of vitamer compounds termed as cobalamins and other two cofactor forms of it are 5′-deoxyadenosylcobalamin, and 5-methyltetrahydrofolate-homocysteine methyltransferase etc. Since vitamin b12 compound forms are generally large so one should seek medical guidance before opting the usage of vitamin b12.

The vitamin b12 is mostly preferrable in food and nutritional supplements. Infact the usage of vitamin b12 do not cause any side effect but in certain conditions may damage the nerve of the eye depend on the type of the case where the prescence of cynide in the blood due to consumption of cigarette .

Omega3 Oils – The Best Way To Be And Stay Healthy Naturally

Omega3 oils are the hot favorites amongst those who look forward to a good health. They are not only beneficial for common problems like arthritis, acne and allergies; they also help in preventing lot many serious health issues related to the functioning of heart and brain.

Omega3 oils are the essential fatty acids which comprise of DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid), EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) and DPA (Docosapentaenoic acid).

It is the deficiency of these essential acids which causes depression, anxiety, mood swings, bipolar disorder, post-partum depression, Alzheimer’s disease, ADHD, ADD etc.

This makes it very important for us to ensure regular intake of Omega3 oils. Now, since our diet cannot have fish in all the meals, it is more feasible to take them in the form of supplements.

Moreover, the fact of the matter is that these supplements are available at such an unbelievably low price which makes a month’s supply of the supplement even more affordable than a single meal comprising of fish!

One of the best Omega3 oils comes from a special fish from New Zealand called Hoki. It has a high content of Omega3 fats and the right proportion of DHA and EPA.

EPA is easier to concentrate and is inexpensive too; this makes it a favorite amongst most Omega3 oil companies. But the truth is that we need DHA more than EPA. So a good oil should have a high content of DHA. Our body has the ability to convert DHA to EPA as per the requirement within the body, so a lower proportion of EPA is not a problem.

While looking for Omega3 oils, do not get lured by the false claims that many companies make. Also, make sure not to be attracted by any brand name that prefers spending money on heavy advertising and publicity instead of creating a high quality product.

Remember, a product is not the best just because it is expensive.

A high quality fish oil can be available at a low price as well. This generally happens for companies who prefer ensuring quality rather than spending their moolah on marketing their products.

If you want to have more information on one such natural and effective oil, visit my website listed below. This give you an edge in selecting the best one from the many Omega3 oils available in the market today.

Nutrition During Pregnancy – Do Not Miss This Essential Nutrient

You’ve probably heard it a hundred times. You need to take a lot of nutrients during pregnancy, have a balanced diet, eat more proteins and so on. Yet so many people miss out on this one essential substance without which nutrition during pregnancy is actually incomplete.

While the basic rules of having a healthy and balanced diet do apply to nutrition during pregnancy, there is one more nutrient you should be taking to ensure the proper brain development of your child.

These are the Omega 3 fats found in fish oil. Specifically the two fats – DHA and EPA are very beneficial for your health.

For the baby, DHA especially helps in proper development of the brain. Over 30% of the human brain is made up of DHA fats. This fact alone should prove how important this nutrient is for the health and efficiency of the brain.

If there is a deficiency of DHA during pregnancy, the child tends to have a lower IQ, behavioral problems and aggression later in her life. This is something that can be easily avoided by ensuring an adequate intake of DHA and EPA during pregnancy.

One way of taking these oils is to directly consume fish as a part of your diet. Just remember that not all fish contain enough or even any DHA and EPA fats. Salmon and Mackerel are two fish that do have them.

An even better choice is the Hoki fish from New Zealand. It has the right proportion of DHA and EPA fats in its oil and so this makes it the ideal candidate for our purposes here.

Sourcing this fish would not be so easy. A much better and easier option for ensuring nutrition during pregnancy is to take a fish oil supplement derived from this fish.

See, ocean waters all over the world are loaded with industrial waste. These contaminants sooner or later make their way into the fish also. If you eat these fish, then you would also be consuming the contaminants along with it. This can prove to be harmful for your health.

If you take a supplement that contains purified oil, this risk can be completely avoided. It will also be much easier to take a couple of fish oil gels a day instead of consuming large quantities of fish in every meal.

Do yourself a favor and ensure proper nutrition during pregnancy by taking a DHA rich oil regularly. This one simple step can provide a lifetime of benefits to you child. Visit my website now to know how to choose the right oil.

Discover Refined Fish Oil

Did you know refined fish oil has been used since the days of the Vikings as a food supplement and for medicinal purposes?  The oils were primarily recommended, at that time, to increase bowel motility and to reduce joint pain.

Just 50 years ago, the supplements were recommended for those same purposes.  Moms also gave it to their children to help reduce the risk of rickets and vitamin A deficiency, because those nutrients were present in the oils, as well.

Many brands are no longer sources of vitamin A or D.  The concern is that too much vitamin A can be toxic, especially to children.  Oils that are derived from the liver (cod liver oil, for example) contain too much vitamin A for children and for pregnant women.  Too much vitamin A causes birth defects.

Vitamin D is only found in some species of fish.  If the brand you are thinking about buying is a good source of vitamin D, it should be listed on the nutrient facts label, located on the back of the bottle.

Research indicates that vitamin D deficiency is on the rise, among people of all ages, regardless of whether they are underweight or obese.  So, it’s a good idea to be sure to get enough of that nutrient, but refined fish oil is not your best choice for increasing your vitamin D intake.  Cholecalciferol or D3 is the most readily absorbable form of the nutrient, other than the type that you skin makes when you are exposed to UV rays from the sun.

The nutrients that are provided by refined fish oil are two that are largely absent in the modern-day diet.  They are Docosahexaenoic acid and Eicosapentaenoic acid; DHA and EPA.

DHA and EPA are long-chained polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids.  They are not found in vegetable oils or plant foods.  At one time, they may have been present in the wild game that people ate.  But, today, they are found only in fish.

DHA is found in some types of marine algae, but the algae supplements do not contain EPA.  Both are important, according to research.

One of the benefits of increased omega-3 intake is a reduced risk of depression.  In different studies DHA alone, EPA alone and a combination of the two fatty acids were used.  The best results were seen when volunteers were given both EPA and DHA.

So, other than eating oily fish, such as salmon, mackerel or sardines, the only way to get EPA and DHA in the diet is by taking a refine fish oil supplement.  Of course, all supplements are not the same and you need to shop with care.  But, if you choose a good brand, you could reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer and a variety of seemingly age-related diseases.

From what we have learned, it isn’t about age, itself.  People get older without suffering from disease.  It’s about small amounts of damage that occur on a molecular level, every day of a person’s life.  We can’t stop the damage completely.  But, with refined fish oil and a healthy lifestyle, we should be able to keep it to a minimum.

Are Omega3 Fats Good For Health?

Answer is yes, omega3 fats are good for health. You might say, “A fat — Good for health; how is this possible?” This is not your fault. We all as layman always related fats and health inversely. But let me tell you this is a wrong notion.

Fats can be classified into 2 broad categories –

Bad Fat – These are saturated fats that not only clog the arteries, but also raise the total cholesterol as well as the LDL (bad) cholesterol levels in our body. They are made up from dairy products and animal fat – beef, chicken, pork and lamb. These fats should be avoided as much as possible as they result in high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attacks, strokes, over weight etc.

Good Fat – These are the unsaturated ones and are required by our body to fight the diseases that are caused after consuming excess of bad fat. They help in over all development of various organs like brain, nervous system etc. One such good fat is omega3.
Omega3 fats are the long chain polyunsaturated essential fats that cannot be manufactured by our body, so they have to be taken explicitly in our daily diet. They are commonly known as omega 3 fatty acids. Flaxseeds, oils, nuts, eggs, fish are some of the rich sources of Omega3 fats.

Benefits of Omega3 fats -

Omega-3 fatty acids have tendency to increase HDL (good) cholesterol, decrease LDL (bad) cholesterol and decrease triglycerides thus, resulting in better blood circulation. Development of plaque and blood clots are the two main reasons of clogged arteries. Blood thinning property of Omega3 fats inhibits this clogging and reduces the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Anti inflammatory properties of omega 3 reduces the inflammation and improves the lung functions in people suffering from asthma. Clinical studies have found that intake of fatty acids improves our bone strength by depositing more calcium in bones. They are also helpful in treating rheumatoid arthritis.

Regular diet of these fats improves the concentration levels in kids. It reduces their anxiety levels, increases their learning skills, and thus helps them in getting better grades. Researches prove that omega 3 fats calms down ADHD symptoms, reduces Dyslexia and are very helpful with Autism.

Experts believe that various issues regarding brain health are related to these fatty acids.  Depression, mood swings, bipolar disorder, Alzheimer’s disease and Attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can improve with consistent use of fish oil supplements.

Now that you know that all fats are not dangerous, some are essential too. I would request you to start taking omega-3 fatty acids supplements to compensate the deficiency in your body. To know more on benefits of omega3 and how to pick the most <a target=”_blank” href=”http://omega3brief.com”>effective omega 3 supplement</a>, please visit my website.

DHA Supplements – Do I Need Them?

You might disagree but hear me out on this; more than 80% of us are deficient in omega 3 fatty acids and need DHA supplements to bridge the gap. Ill effects of these deficiency may be dormant for some time but believe me they will be evident sooner or later in the form of high cholesterol, sleep disorder, strokes, heart attacks, loss of vision, etc.
So why not take safety measures now – remember prevention is better than cure.

Why DHA Supplements?

DHA is a form of omega 3 fatty acids that are not produced in our body but are essential for various organs of our body to work properly. So we have to take them explicitly in our diet. Vegetarian sources i.e. flaxseeds and oil does not contain DHA but body can convert fatty acids in them to DHA. Since conversion may not always be effective, it is recommended to consume food products rich in DHA like fish.

Since ocean water and hence the fishes in them are not free from toxins, good quality DHA supplement is recommended.

Benefits of DHA supplements

Pregnant women are often told to take these supplements regularly. This helps in reducing chance of developing pre-eclampsia and postpartum depression. This also reduces the chance of premature births and cesarean.

DHA supplements play a vital role in the growth of kids also. It helps in better hand/eye coordination, immunity development, improvement in mental sharpness, comprehension and vocabulary skills.

Human brain is made up of a high percentage of fat. Docosahexaenoic acid commonly known as DHA constitutes of more than 50% of the fat in brain.
Lower levels of DHA can hamper the brain growth and may affect brain performance. This may result in diseases like Dyslexia and Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

People suffering from diabetes tend to have high triglyceride and low HDL levels. DHA helps in lowering triglycerides and apoproteins, cholesterol and blood pressure. They also help in increasing HDL levels.

Best way to prevent heart disease is to eat low-fat and polyunsaturated (DHA is one of such fat) diet. Heart attack occurs when artery supplying blood to heart is blocked. Studies prove that regular intake of DHA supplement breaks up the clots and thus protect us from heart attack and stroke.

As you can see DHA is one such fatty acid that has important for everybody and in various stages of life. Right from the day when we as humans are conceived i.e. fetus, till we grow old passing through various phases of a child and an adult; we need DHA at every stage to prevent some or the other ailment.

In nutshell – you cannot choose to ignore the DHA deficiency. To learn more on the benefits of DHA and <a target=”_blank” href=”http://omega3brief.com”>effective DHA supplements</a>, visit my website.
