Garlic – The Anti Everything

Garlic limits inflammatory compounds

Garlic is great at reducing inflammation because it contains compounds that inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase which are enzymes that promote inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Along with the Vitamin C it contains, these anti-inflammatory compounds in fresh garlic make it especially useful in protecting the body against severe attacks of asthma and can also reduce the pain and inflammation that is caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

NF Kappa B and the common cold

Studies conducted at the University of Munich in Germany have found garlic to significantly reduce the activity of the chemical mediator of inflammation: NF kappa-B. Nuclear transcription factor (NF) kappa-B is a chemical that is activated as part of your immune systems inflammatory response to invading organisms. A surge in NF kappa-B can be triggered by things like allergenic foods, high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, colds, physical trauma and other infections. This NF kappa-B surge promotes the inflammation response and sets up ideal conditions for viruses to replicate. In these German studies, unfertilized garlic caused a 25% drop in NF kappa-B activity in blood samples.

Allicin: the microbe killer

Allicin, the sulfur compound that forms when garlic is chopped or otherwise crushed, not only gives garlic that distinctive pungency, it is also a powerful antiviral and antibacterial agent with the ability to annihilate potentially harmful microbes. Research studies on Allicin show it to be effective against the common cold, flu and stomach viruses. It has also shown the ability to fight off Candida yeast and even defend the body against powerful pathogens such as tuberculosis and botulism.

Peptic ulcers

Garlic cannot prevent a person from getting an infection from Heliobacter pylori, the bacterium which causes peptic ulcers. However, eating garlic may help keep this bacterium from doing too much damage. A study conducted in Turkey compared two groups of people: one group that loved to eat lots of garlic both raw and cooked and another group that avoided it at all costs. Blood samples were collected for 19 months and evaluated for the presence of H.pylori. While both groups did display comparable results when it came to the presence of the bacterium, the garlic loving group did display a much lower H.pylori antibody count within their blood.

Drug resistant Strains of Bacteria

Garlic has also shown the ability to be a potent antibiotic even against strains of drug resistant bacteria. A study published in 2003 by the University of California Irvine Medical School, showed that garlic juice displayed significant antibacterial activity against many antibiotic-resistant strains including staphylococci, enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

CLA Effects On Lean Body Mass

CLA Effects On Lean Body Mass

Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) is getting great reviews on its positive effects on metabolic rate, fat oxidation and muscle building; some pretty big claims! But does conjugated linoleic acid work? Let’s take a look at what CLA is and how it affects lean body mass.

What Is CLA?
CLA is a naturally occurring polyunsaturated fatty acid present in foods such as cheese, red meat and dairy products. It is known as a ‘good’ fat as is essential to the body for it to function properly. The amount of CLA found naturally in the food products mentioned is not enough to promote its full benefits and this is further compounded as the foods that contain naturally occurring CLA also contain large amount of calories and saturated ‘bad’ fats. Therefore supplementation is a very convenient way to achieve increased, healthy consumption.

Supplemental CLA is made from taking linoleic acid found in safflower oil and sunflower oil and converting it in a lab to conjugated linoleic acid.

Benefits & Effects Of CLA
One study performed on CLA conducted a six month trial; ‘Subjects were randomised into two groups supplemented with either 3 x 4 g/d CLA or placebo for 6 months. CLA significantly decreased BFM (body fat mass) at month 3 (Delta=- 0 x 9 %, P=0 x 016) and at month 6 (Delta=- 3 x 4 %, P=0 x 043) compared with placebo’ (Gaullier et. Al 2007).

The same study also saw an increase in lean body mass (LBM) within the CLA group. From the results of this study we can conclude that CLA is an effective oral supplement that has significant benefits to users looking for overall increases in muscle and decreases in body fat.

Why Are Fish Capsules Better Than Eating Fish?

Your presence here indicates that you are a health conscious person and you are aware of the omega 3 fats and their benefits. But currently you are confused on the right choice of source and are looking for answer to the question that what is better — eating fish or taking fish capsules? You are not alone, there are millions out there pondering upon the same question.

Intake of fish capsules is any day better than taking fishes to bridge the gap of deficiency of omega 3 fatty acids in our body. Let us go back a bit and start from basics to understand how.

DHA and EPA are two forms of omega 3 fatty acids that are readily absorbed by our body. Both of them are essential for functional growth of various parts like brain, nervous system, etc. Since neither of them is produced within our body, we have to depend on our diet to avoid their deficiency.

Fishes are rich source of DHA and EPA. Because ocean water is polluted with various chemicals, fishes inside them are also not spared. They are full of toxins like PCBs, Dioxins, lead, mercury, etc. Even farm fed fishes are also not uncontaminated as the pellets fed to them are partly made from tainted fish.

Thus, the safest choice is to shift to fish capsules. These capsules contain fish oil. Fish oil as the name suggest is the oil extracted from the tissues of healthy, fat and oily fishes. So it is rich in DHA and EPA.
Just filling the capsules with the fishoil, does not make them good for use. There are many important processes that should be followed while processing the fish oil so that it is pure and effective.

Salient feature of effective fish capsules –

1. They should be highly concentrated and should have higher percentage of DHA as compared to EPA. A soft gel should contain 280mg of DHA and 120 mg of EPA for the maximum rewards.
2. Oil in them should have under gone molecular distillation process. This process not only reduces the levels of toxins in the oil but also results in an end product that is of pharmaceutical grade.
3. They should not have any foul smell, instead should smell like ocean water. You can be sure of presence of any artificial fragrance in them by cutting a soft gel and putting it to smell test. If you are able to identify fragrances like lime – beware, the oil is not fresh. Simply discard it.

Since all the products available in the market are effective, be aware of the cheap ones. They can do more harm than good.

How to Compare Fish Oils

If you compare fish oil, you will see that there are three basic kinds on the market.  The one that has been around for more years than any other is the natural triglyceride form.

Triglycerides are a kind of fat, composed of three fatty acids and a glycerol or glycerin molecule.  High triglycerides in the bloodstream are a risk factor for heart disease and other health problems, which is why we are told to limit our intake of dietary fats.

But, in the 1970s, researchers reported that the Greenland Eskimos had a very low incidence of heart disease (practically non-existence), even though their diets were very high in fat.  The kinds of fats in their diets were primarily those found in fatty fish and seal meat.

That’s when researchers began to compare fish oils to other kinds of fats.  They learned that the fats found in seafood were primarily omega-3 fatty acids; news that they shared with the public.

By comparison, the fats found in the typical American diet include a lot of trans-fatty acids, saturated fats and omega6 fats.  And, the American incidence of heart disease is very high.  It is still the number one killer of men and women of all races.

When you compare fish oil, you will also see the concentrated esters, which are also natural and readily available for use by the human body, but they have been distilled to remove contaminants such as mercury.  The distillation process also makes the omega-3 concentration higher than it is in the triglyceride form.

But, there is reason to believe that the natural triglyceride form has more anti-inflammatory activity; that the distillation process removes some quotient of the oil that is beneficial to your health.  That’s why there is another kind on the market.  That kind is a 50/50 mix of natural triglycerides and concentrated esters.

The purpose is to provide the highest possible level of omega-3 fatty acids, while providing the highest degree of anti-inflammatory activity.  So, when you compare fish oils, it’s a good idea to look for the 50/50 mix.

You may be aware that inflammation plays a role in arthritis and other painful conditions.  But, did you know that it plays a role in heart disease and cancer, as well?

Many people are unaware of the toll that chronic inflammation plays on the body.  One of the reasons that obesity is bad for the health is that fat cells burst and cause inflammation.

When you compare fish oils, you may notice that many manufacturers do not list the anti-inflammatory action as a benefit.  That’s because they are not allowed to.  In the US, if something has anti-inflammatory activity, then it is a drug and it must be regulated as such.

Dietary supplements and foods are regulated differently.  If a manufacturer wants to make a health claim concerning a nutrient or a food, they must appeal to the FDA.  Their appeals are often denied.

Make no mistake about it.  Anti-inflammatory activity is not the only thing to consider when you compare fish oil, but it is very important.  Don’t forget about it.

How to Compare Fish Oil Supplements

Let’s face it.  When you compare fish oil supplements, you should look at the total omega-3 content, the DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) content, the purity and the freshness, as well as the price.  The cheapest ones are probably not your best bet, but there is no need to pay extra if you aren’t getting anything extra.

In most cases, the high-priced brands don’t provide anything extra.  They cost more because they are heavily advertised or promoted by a celebrity spokesperson.  Either way, the manufacturer is charging extra in order to cover their advertising costs.

Every company has to advertise, these days.  But, billboards, full page magazine ads, television commercials and even radio spots cost a lot more than other types of advertising.  Smart manufacturers know that they get more for their money if they stick primarily with internet advertising and the “nicer” companies pass that savings along to you, the customer.

So, if you recognize the brand name on a supplement as one that has been on diet books or if you recognize the name as one that has been promoted on talk shows, then consider buying another brand.  If you compare fish oil supplements based solely on the quality (the amount of omega-3s, the DHA content, the purity and freshness), you will save money and still get the results that you expect.

Although the brands vary, the average one, these days, contains 1000mg of oils or a gram of fat per serving.  At least 50% of that fat should be omega-3 fat.  You’ll need to check the label or the manufacturer’s website to find out.

At least 28% of the fatty acids should be DHA.  If you compare fish oil supplements from different manufacturers, you will see that most of them are high in Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA.  Some don’t list the individual amount of any of the fatty acids.  The label simply says “contains DHA and EPA”.

The purity and freshness should be proven by a certificate of analysis from an independent laboratory.  A number of different laboratories are certified to perform the analyses.  Manufactures do not have the equipment to perform the testing at their facilities.

Of course, the manufacturers have to pay for testing and some of them don’t want to go to the extra expense.  They would rather spend their dollars on ads.  Testing doesn’t cost that much and the manufacturers don’t have to charge much extra to be able to afford the tests.

But, if you compare fish oil supplements that are very low in price, you will find that there is no certificate of analysis available.  You can try contacting the manufacturer to find out what criteria they adhere to for purity and freshness, but that’s a frustrating and time-consuming thing to do.

How to Find the Purest Fish Oil

Here’s a really simple way to find the purest fish oil.  It should be easy!  Right?  Every company should provide the utmost in purity.  They should also provide proof.  But, most companies don’t.

The proof that you are looking for in this case is a certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent laboratory.  Manufacturers do not have the necessary equipment to test for impurities at their own facilities.

If impurities are found, it is necessary to use molecular distillation or another technique to remove them.  With molecular distillation, all detectable levels of an impurity can be removed.

So, you might say that the purest fish oil is one that has been molecularly distilled.  But, molecular distillation apparently removes some element from the natural triglycerides that are responsible for the oil’s anti-inflammatory activity, according to laboratory studies.

Researchers have compared the anti-inflammatory activity of a standard supplement, a concentrated one and a blend that contains natural triglycerides.  They found that the blend containing the triglycerides had more anti-inflammatory activity.  They just can’t explain why.

It was thought that the anti-inflammatory activity was due solely to the omega-3 content.  But, the concentrated supplement had the highest percentage of omega-3s.

In other studies, it has been shown that omega-3s are converted within the body into hormones that are less inflammatory than those hormones produced from omega-6s.  It has also been shown that omega-3s stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory molecules.  But, those findings still did not seem to explain the amount of inflammation relief that has been seen in arthritis studies.

The additional anti-inflammatory activity of the natural triglycerides does seem to explain the reduction in morning stiffness and pain that has been seen in those studies.  Volunteers in the studies have been able to reduce the amount of pain-relieving medications that they take every day, which is a bonus for their livers.

So, is it possible to get the purest fish oil and the best anti-inflammatory benefits?  It is possible if companies are selective about the species that they select.

The north Atlantic is obviously polluted, heavily.  The Pacific is becoming that way, too.  The cleanest waters are found off of the coast of Antarctica.  So, fish that swim in that area will have the least amount of contaminants in their tissues and organs.

Contaminants are most highly concentrated in the liver.  So, Cod liver oil is not a great choice.  The purest fish oil is pressed from the flesh, not from the liver.

One species of coldwater fish that is gaining in popularity is called the hoki.  The hoki has a large strip of fat running through each filet.  It helps to keep the hoki warm in the cold deep waters that it inhabits.

The fat is rich in Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA, which is somewhat unusual.  Most species have a higher concentration of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) than DHA.  While both are good for us, DHA seems to be most important, according to clinical trials.

Silicone Vs. Saline Breast Implants: How Do They Compare?

Women seeking breast augmentation have two primary implant options: saline and silicone. But what are the pros and cons of each? What should candidates consider before opting for one type of implant over the other?

Both saline and silicone gel breast implants have been around since the 1960s. Each implant is popular with women in the United States, but each has important strengths and drawbacks that someone considering breast augmentation must consider.

Saline

Saline implants are filled with sterile salt water after an empty shell has been inserted in the breast. A woman might choose saline over silicone for many reasons, and the major benefits of saline are as follows:

· A smaller incision may be used depending on surgeon recommendations, as implants are filled after the shell has been inserted in the breast.

· Ruptures are easier to detect in saline implants than in silicone implants.

· If a rupture occurs, sterile salt water is absorbed by the body, causing minimal damage.

· Patients can have breast size altered post-surgery without replacing the implant entirely.

Finally, it is important to know that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of saline implants in women over the age of 18.

High-Cohesive Silicone Gel

Silicone implants are filled with elastic gel and have undergone multiple improvements and refinements over the years. Some of their main advantages are as follows:

· Silicone generally looks and feels more natural than saline.

· Silicone implants are less likely to wrinkle or ripple than saline implants.

· Improved implant designs continue to help minimize risks and drawbacks.

· Women may not need to have implants replaced as often as they would with saline implants.

· Implants are available in different sizes and profiles, giving women many options.

The FDA has approved the use of silicone implants in women over the age of 22.

Choosing an Implant

Although continued advances in silicone gel implants attract many women, choosing a breast augmentation option is a very personal decision. Ultimately, a patient’s desired breast size, anatomy, and physical history must be factored in, and this is best done in consultation with a certified plastic surgeon.

If you live in the Denver area and would like to explore your options for breast augmentation, please contact certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Broadway today to schedule a consultation.
