Green Tea–Drink Amazing Medicine In A Teacup

Green tea has  been consumed by the Chinese for centuries as a result of its medicinal properties and also as a wonderful beverage. There is in fact  strong evidence that this beverage has been in use for over 4000 years in China. Todays  research, from a number of sources, provides very strong evidence in support of the health benefits of drinking green tea.

Research performed by scientists at the University of Purdue  has determined that catechin polyphenol compounds, which are found in green teas, have medicinal  factors which disable the growth of cancer cells in humans and destroy them without  any affect on healthy cells. Research also shows that cholesterol levels are reduced to a great extent  by consuming green tea. The ratio of good HDL cholesterol to bad LDL cholesterol improves. In addition, the formation of  abnormal blood clots is  inhibited. This is very good news  because abnormal blood clots ( which are known as  thrombosis) are a serious factor  in causing strokes and heart attacks.

Studies have determined that catechin polyphenol compounds in green tea have remarkable antibacterial effects, which can  help in the prevention of food poisoning and in the prevention  of dental plaque, by killing the bacteria which promote it. This amazing tea may also have benefits for weight loss. Scientists at the University Of Geneva in Switzerland found that men who received a combination of green tea extract and caffeine burned up many more calories during exercise than a control group of men who were given only caffeine.

The catechin compounds found  in green tea are known to be powerful antioxidants. Because of this they help to slow down the aging process in  human beings who drink considerable quantities of the tea. This delightful  and  very relaxing beverage also contains quantities of vitamin E which is another excellent antioxidant.

In summary green tea is certainly one of the most amazing medicines available. Its health boosting effects are numerous, and it has no detrimental effects except the presence of small levels of caffeine, which might cause insomnia if consumed late in the day. However the quantity of caffeine in a cupful of the tea is a small fraction of that found in coffee.

Antibiotic-Resistant Disease Killing Humans and Swine

Health officials said the bacteria is being
transmitted to humans through pigs. The
increased use of antibiotics in agriculture may
be behind the spread of the resistant strain.

What are ESBLs?

Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) are
actually enzymes produced by certain types of
bacteria, which renders the bacteria resistant
to the antibiotics commonly used to treat them.

ESBLs were first discovered in the mid-1980s. At
the time they were mostly found in the
Klebsiella species of bacteria, in hospital
intensive care units. Until recently, few people
were affected by these mutated bacteria and it
didn’t appear to be a major growing concern.

That has changed, however. According to the
British Health Protection Agency (HPA), a new
class of ESBL (called CTX-M enzymes) has emerged,
which are now being widely detected among E.Coli
bacteria. These ESBL-producing E. Coli are
resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins, and
are becoming more frequent in urinary tract
infections.

Other species of bacteria that can now produce
ESBLs include:

K. pneumoniae
K. oxytoca
Salmonella
Proteus mirabilis
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
The Problem is Worse Than You Think!

According to a study published October 2007 in
the Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA), there were close to 100,000 cases of
invasive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) infections in the United States
in 2005, which lead to more than 18,600 deaths.

To put that number into perspective, HIV/AIDS
killed 17,000 people that year.

Antibiotic-resistant disease IS a major man-made
problem.

This was the study that propelled MRSA into the
news last year, combined with a number of school
outbreaks that took place around the same time.
Discussions focused largely on reducing medical
over-use of antibiotics, and proper hygiene such
as washing your hands with soap and water to
reduce the spread of infectious disease.

But little has been said about the rampant
over-use of antibiotics in agriculture, which is
a MAJOR source of human antibiotic consumption,
and hence increased antibiotic resistance.

Agriculture as a Source of Antibiotic Resistance

Both MRSA and ESBL are being traced back to
animals raised for food production, especially
pigs.

These animals are often fed antibiotics at low
doses for disease prevention and growth promotion.
Animals receiving antibiotics in their feed gain
4 to 5 percent more body weight than animals that
do not receive antibiotics, but the price is high
for you, the end consumer, because this practice
also creates the perfect conditions for antibiotic
resistance to flourish.

Denmark’s health officials claim they’re unsure of
how farmers and veterinarians, who have not
consumed infected meat, are becoming infected.
However, according to research cited on Johns
Hopkins website, the main reservoir of these
organisms is in the lower digestive tract, and
they can persist within the gastrointestinal tract
for months. So perhaps the answer doesn’t have to
be all that complicated.

So, the meat industry practice of using antibiotics
is indeed a driving force behind the development of
antibiotic resistance in a now wide variety of
bacteria that cause human disease.

The long stalemate on this issue constitutes a
struggle between strong science and bad politics.
The FDA finally banned the use of fluoroquinolones
– a widely used class of antimicrobials — from
agricultural use August 1997, but not without the
Bayer Corporation kicking and screaming in vehement
opposition. After all, antibiotics for livestock
use is big business. It constitutes about 70
percent of ALL antibiotic use! They couldn’t
replace that market with human consumers even if
they tried.

Other Agricultural Sources of Antibiotics

Another heavily tainted meat product you should stay
away from is conventionally raised chicken. A 2006
study published in the Journal of Infectious
Diseases found that bacteria from conventional
chicken and from people who ate the chicken became
resistant to Synercid, a strong antibiotic used to
treat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In essence, it
can cause resistance to the last lines of defense
currently available in the modern medicine cabinet.

It also found that it was rare to find resistant
bacteria among antibiotic-free chicken, while the
majority of bacterial isolates from conventional
poultry were resistant.

But, the ramifications of using antibiotics in
agriculture don’t end there. Antibiotics filter
down through the food chain in sometimes
non-suspecting ways.

Antibiotics are also being transferred, via
manure, into your food supply.

A 2007 study in the Journal of Environmental
Quality looked at whether food crops will
accumulate antibiotics from soil covered with
antibiotic-containing manure.

In a greenhouse setting, corn, lettuce and
potatoes were grown on soil that contained hog
manure with a commonly used veterinary
antibiotic added.

The antibiotics were absorbed by all three
crops, into both their leaves and tissue.
Meanwhile, the antibiotics also transferred to
the potato tubers, suggesting that root crops
like carrots, radishes and potatoes may be
particularly at risk of antibiotic accumulation.

These findings unfortunately also have
implications for organic farmers, who often use
manure as their main source of fertilizer. And,
as it stands, manure that contains antibiotics
is still allowed under the organic label.

How to Avoid Excessive Antibiotic Exposure

So how can you ensure that the food you feed to
yourself and your family is pure and healthy?

Apart from growing it yourself, your best option
is to get to know a local farmer near you — one
who uses non-toxic farming methods. If you live
in an urban area, there are increasing numbers of
community-supported agriculture programs available
that give you access to healthy, locally grown
foods even if you live in the heart of the city.

If you are looking for a safer alternative to
commercially raised beef please be sure to check
out grass-fed beef. Grass-fed cattle are not
routinely fed antibiotics. They may occasionally
receive them for an infection, but that would be
the rare exception, and even then they are only
used for a few days.

How to Compare Fish Oil Supplements

Let’s face it.  When you compare fish oil supplements, you should look at the total omega-3 content, the DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) content, the purity and the freshness, as well as the price.  The cheapest ones are probably not your best bet, but there is no need to pay extra if you aren’t getting anything extra.

In most cases, the high-priced brands don’t provide anything extra.  They cost more because they are heavily advertised or promoted by a celebrity spokesperson.  Either way, the manufacturer is charging extra in order to cover their advertising costs.

Every company has to advertise, these days.  But, billboards, full page magazine ads, television commercials and even radio spots cost a lot more than other types of advertising.  Smart manufacturers know that they get more for their money if they stick primarily with internet advertising and the “nicer” companies pass that savings along to you, the customer.

So, if you recognize the brand name on a supplement as one that has been on diet books or if you recognize the name as one that has been promoted on talk shows, then consider buying another brand.  If you compare fish oil supplements based solely on the quality (the amount of omega-3s, the DHA content, the purity and freshness), you will save money and still get the results that you expect.

Although the brands vary, the average one, these days, contains 1000mg of oils or a gram of fat per serving.  At least 50% of that fat should be omega-3 fat.  You’ll need to check the label or the manufacturer’s website to find out.

At least 28% of the fatty acids should be DHA.  If you compare fish oil supplements from different manufacturers, you will see that most of them are high in Eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA.  Some don’t list the individual amount of any of the fatty acids.  The label simply says “contains DHA and EPA”.

The purity and freshness should be proven by a certificate of analysis from an independent laboratory.  A number of different laboratories are certified to perform the analyses.  Manufactures do not have the equipment to perform the testing at their facilities.

Of course, the manufacturers have to pay for testing and some of them don’t want to go to the extra expense.  They would rather spend their dollars on ads.  Testing doesn’t cost that much and the manufacturers don’t have to charge much extra to be able to afford the tests.

But, if you compare fish oil supplements that are very low in price, you will find that there is no certificate of analysis available.  You can try contacting the manufacturer to find out what criteria they adhere to for purity and freshness, but that’s a frustrating and time-consuming thing to do.

History Of Breast Implants

The first documented attempt to augment (enlarge) the breast happened 119 years ago.  For the first 68 years, breast augmentation was attempted by direct injection with materials, including paraffin, fat, and free silicone.  These attempts led to disastrous consequences including infection, hard breast lumps, deformity, fat absorption, fat necrosis, and chronic inflammatory reactions.  Removal was difficult, sometimes leading to measures as drastic as mastectomy.  After the invention of the mammogram, these injections were found to create artifacts that made cancer screening more difficult.  For these reasons, direct injections of the breast were abandoned by most plastic surgeons in the US.  Free silicone injections into the breast for augmentation still continued in many other countries into the latter part of the 20th century, however.

Commercially made breast implants were first available in the US in 1958, and over 200 different implant types and designs have been made since then.  Experts estimate that 60% of these were silicone gel filled implants with the exception of 1992-2006, when the FDA moratorium was in place.  During this time, saline filled implants dominated the market.  Dow Corning dominated the implant market for the first 30 years, but over 15 other companies made breast implants during the 1980s.  Although Congress gave the FDA authority to regulate medical devices in 1976, breast implants had been “grandfathered in”, and few of the products underwent rigorous testing in clinical trials prior to sale on the open market.  Regulation of breast implants did not occur until 1991, when the FDA asked companies to submit premarket approval applications.  As a result, the implant industry was caught “blind sided” when the FDA demanded comprehensive data with a 90-day deadline for completion of all safety studies.  With the simultaneous onslaught of thousands of lawsuits, the implant manufacturers were caught in a vice between the new demands of the FDA, the chorus of “expert witnesses” claiming silicone-immune links, and the tidal wave of litigation.  Without good data to defend silicone implant safety, the industry collapsed in less than three years.  In 1992, the FDA banned the use of silicone gel filled implants outside of an FDA-approved research protocol due to concerns of safety.  During the 1990s, all but two of the breast implant manufacturers went out of business or stopped making implants as a result of the breast implant litigation.  In 1996, the courts appointed a National Science Panel that reviewed over 2,000 medical documents and heard testimony from legal, medical, and scientific experts.  The panel released their findings in 1998, concluding that there are no identifiable associations between the use of silicone implants and disease.  In 1999, the National Academy Institute of Medicine issued a 455-page report that concluded that connective tissue diseases, cancer, neurological diseases, or other systemic complications are no more common in women with breast implants than in women without implants.  In 2006, the FDA lifted the moratorium on silicone gel filled implants, with the condition that the two remaining manufacturers did large post approval studies involving 81,260 patients over a 10-year period starting November 17, 2006.

Today most patients in the US are choosing silicone gel implants for both cosmetic and reconstructive breast surgery again, but the capsular contracture (breast hardening) rates are no better today than they were in the 1960s when these implants were first developed.  In retrospect, capsular contracture was the major complication with the first attempt at augmentation in 1890 and is still the major complication with breast augmentation in 2009.  Despite this well known fact, the majority of the attention given to implants over the 119-year period has focused on implant rupture and unsubstantiated claims that implants cause systemic human disease.

Current silicone gel filled implants in the US are what many call “4th generation” implants, which have much stricter manufacturing standards and testing standards.  “5th generation” implants have already been in use in Europe for ten years and in Canada for five years, but are still not approved by the FDA.  These “5th generation” implants are cohesive gel implants commonly referred to as “gummy bear” implants.  The advantages of these implants include less rippling and the lack of gel extrusion/leak if the silicone elastomer shell breaks.  There are also hopes that these implants would have a lower capsular contracture rate, but preliminary evidence suggests that contracture is still a major problem as with all previous generations of implants.

We must learn from the history of silicone gel implants and not repeat history again.  Good scientific research must precede commerce and marketing.  The cost of bringing a new implant to market has exponentially increased as a result of FDA requirements and legal risk.  Now most new implants are first being tested in Europe or South America and often are approved decades there before approval in the US.  Many clinical trials are being done worldwide on existing implants and on new implants before US market approval is obtained.  Long term studies still need to be done on implant rupture rates.  Innovations need to be made to reduce the most common complication, capsular contracture, which still occurs today after 119 years of history.

Breast Enhancement Herbs – What Are The Top Female Breast Enlargement Herbs?

Breast Enhancement Herbs

The existence of female breast enlargement herbs has been heard a part of natural medicine on any continent for centuries. The herbs that still ancient healers knew is able to appreciate and even enlarge breasts are now dubbed ‘phytoestrogens’ by the scientific world. Phytoestrogens are substances in plants overly own a similar influence on the body to estrogen. Because estrogen is the hormone the current produces breast growth in the body, fooling the body to concept it has a greater amount of estrogen causes breasts to enlarge with new superior breast tissue.

Although these female breast herbs take time for results to show, they can, if used correctly, cause breasts to grow over the course of a month or so. Some products that use these herbs claim that their product can cause breast growth of up to two sizes, and they also advertise that the new growth is permanent. You can always turn to the expensive and sometimes dangerous plastic surgery implant route, but the female breast enlargement herbs that have been used for centuries can make a big difference in the bust line without the lifelong risk of implant problems or the risks of surgery themselves, which can be substantial.

Most companies will tell you that these herbs don’t work for everyone, but they do work for most people. And the best companies will offer you a money back guarantee, so you can try the female breast enlargement herbs at no risk. Now, if you just go to the herbal grocer in your area, they’re probably not going to offer you a money back guarantee. But the companies that are charging $60 or more for their products should. Breast Enhancement Herbs

The female breast enlargement herbs that have been found to be most useful are: saw palmetto, Don Quai, wild yam, dandelion root, blessed thistle, kava, and the herb from Thailand called Pueraria Mirifica, and fenugreek. Fenugreek is an interesting herb that was used for centuries by harem girls in the Middle East to produce more healthy breast tissue, thus enlarging their breasts. Taken internally, this is one of the best breast herbs. Saw palmetto, too, has been used for centuries in North and South America.

Native to the continent of America, it is now often recommended by naturopathic physicians to naturally enlarge breasts. Wild yam is another of the best female breast enlargement herbs, and it has been recommended by some not only for breast enhancement but for breast health as well. It can be used in conjunction with fenugreek for a more dramatic effect than either herb alone. Of the other female breast enlargement herbs, Pueraria Mirifica is a very interesting and more recent addition to Western herbal health, although it has been known in Thailand for centuries.

Also known in Thailand as Kwao Krua, it has only recently become commercially available in the West, since it took a while for the Thailand government to share its ancient remedy with the rest of us. Pueraria Mirifica has been shown by Thailand scientific studies to augment breast size up to 80 percent, although these results have not yet been duplicated in the United States or Europe. It has, like wild yam, been shown to help with general breast health, and some say that it helps offset a woman’s chance of breast cancer.

Generally, female breast enlargement herbs create more healthy breast tissue by stimulating breast growth in much the same way that estrogen would. They are given a safety rating called “GRASE” by the FDA, meaning they are “generally regarded as safe and effective”. Although the powers that be in the US do not stand behind them 100 percent because of the shortage of scientific studies on their effectiveness, most women who try them report a positive change. Studies show that men and women alike believe larger breasts are more attractive, so it makes sense that female breast enlargement herbs would be popular.

Studies also show that women have better self esteem when they feel good about their bust line, so employing these herbs can have an even more dramatic positive effect on life than just having a drawer full of new bras. Breast Enhancement Surgeries, Which One is Suitable for You?

Before deciding to undergo any breast surgery, it is important to have a clear knowledge on the different types of breast enhancement surgeries available.

As recommended by Yvonne Lee in her book “To All Women Who Want To Enhance Their Breasts Naturally, But Don’t Know How To Start”, it is best to seek several consultations with different surgeons as different surgeons might be using different techniques, have different opinions, and will have different aesthetic preferences.

One type of breast enhancement surgery is “Benelli Mastopexy (Peri-Areola breast lift)”. Peri-Areola breast lift is one of the several techniques for breast lift whereby the scars are designed around the areola. It is useful for women with a projecting nipple/areola complex (sometimes called torpedo or missile shaped breasts), and can also be used to reduce the size of the areola at the same time.

To be suitable for Benelli Mastopexy, the patient must be in good health, and not have any active diseases or pre-existing medical conditions. Due to the natural stretching and sagging of the breast skin after pregnancy, it is highly recommend that the patient waits until she no longer wants to have any additional children before having the surgery.

Another type of breast enhancement surgery is Breast augmentation. It is technically known as augmentation mammoplasty, it is a surgical procedure to enhance the size and shape of a women’s breast for several reasons. The reasons could be to enhance the body contour of a women who feels that her breast size is too small; to correct a reduction in breast volume after pregnancy; to balance a difference in breast size; or even as a reconstructive technique following breast surgery.

Each patient should understand that in every surgery, pain and discomfort would be included. As every individual has different body constitutes, they will need to spent different amount of time on their recovery process, this would results in a loss of time from work and other activities. As all surgical procedures produce scars, it is important to be very sure of what your decision is before proceeding, as the scar is permanent.

Breast Lift (Mastopexy) is another breast surgery available. Breast lift surgery is performed to remove the excess skin of sagging breasts without greatly reducing the size of the breast. It is usually done as a cosmetic procedure whereby the breast is given a more youthful, and perky appearance.

Breast lift is suitable for women who are happy with the size of their breasts but are dissatisfied with the sagging and loss of firmness that occurs with age. Breast lift surgery can be performed in healthy women of any age. As some older women have a higher possibility of sagging breasts, it is more common for them to choose breast lift surgery.

For those women that intend to enlarge their breasts using implants, they can also consider breast lift to be performed in conjunction as it has a lifting effect for the enlarged breasts. A woman that wishes to raise the position of downward facing nipples or reduce the size of large areola can consider Mastopexy too. This surgical procedure is also a choice for those who want to balance asymmetry of breasts or to match a healthy breast to one that has been operated on for breast cancer.

Breast reduction is another surgery performed by cosmestic surgeons. There are several reasons as to why some women choose to undergo breast reduction surgery in some part of their life. They could face the pains of being tortured by neck, and back pain due to the large sagging breasts. Their shoulder could also be sore due to the bra strap cutting into them. To some, it may even be difficult for them to exercise, play sports, and fit into clothing. Therefore, breast reduction surgery is performed to produce smaller, lighter, and firmer breasts that are more proportionate to the body. These results could help to heal the patient’s physical or emotional pains.

If the patient is a smoker, he/she will be required to stop smoking for at least a week before and after the surgery. For those who are overweight, they will most likely be asked to loss the extra pounds before the surgery. Women intending to breastfeed some point in time are not recommended to undergo this surgery. Women with elastic skin would have a better chance for the breasts to transform back to its original tightness.

It is very important for you to consider the risk and complications of breast surgery. A number of online web site functions commercially, this make it possible for them not to disclose all information about the complications and risks of breast surgery. It is important to collate information from different sources as it could aid in your final decision-making.

The above information is found in Ms Yvonne Lee, internationally acclaimed book “To All Women Who Want To Enhance Their Breasts Naturally, But Don’t Know How To Start”. It describes and details the most important breast enhancement techniques from every corner of the world. Author Yvonne Lee, provides an unbiased pro-and-con analysis of each technique, in addition to practical information such as how and where to get it, cost, and potential impact on insurance coverage.
