Essential Fatty Acid – Are you getting The Right Type And Correct Amount Of It Every Day?

Has this ever happened to you? I was very annoyed after it happened to me!

Some years ago a pharmacist suggested it would be good for me to take fish oil capsules to increase my omega 3 essential fatty acid intakes to help my high blood pressure and cholesterol levels.

He sold me a big container of 400 soft gels and said take 2 capsules 3 times a day.

I took them religiously for a couple of years until about 18 months ago when I became more interested in researching and learning about health issues in general, and particularly how fish oil and multi vitamin supplements may help my health more.

Looking back I guess what annoyed me the most, is how naive I was in taking his advice without really understanding the issues. I think most people tend do the same because they don’t have time or the inclination to look into these matters themselves.

Conditioning leads us to be easily persuaded by recommendations from an authority figure like a pharmacist, you understand they are trained and knowledgeable — so you are confident they have your best interests at heart.

However I have learnt it’s not that simple. Even if you are given what appears to be sound advice and a recommendation for a fish oil product, it may not be the best and most effective option for you.

As it happens the soft gels I took had low levels of essential fatty acids compared to the overall amount of fish oil, and to make matters worse the amount of EPA was twice the level of DHA.

I have since learnt that about 50% of the total capsule content should be omega-3 fatty acids and the other 50% fish oil. Also the amount DHA should be approximately double the amount of EPA.

So you can understand how annoyed I was taking these soft gels for a few years only to realize I had not been taking the optimal amount and the fatty acid quantities were the wrong way around, therefore I didn’t get the health benefits I could have had.

When we talk about essential fatty acid it means your body needs it, but doesn’t make it by itself — there are 2 types you need to know about.

Linoleic acid (omega-6 fatty acid) comes from a variety of vegetables, nuts, sunflower and certain oils. As it happens our Western diet is rich in this acid, so we tend to get too much of it.

Alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3 fatty acid) sources are green vegetables, pumpkin and mustard seeds, soybean oil and flaxseed that has high ALA levels. Sources rich in DHA and EPA are fish oil from cold water dwelling fatty fish like cod, salmon, herring, tuna and mackerel.

The general idea is to try and reduce your omega-6 consumption and increase your omega-3 intake to get an optimal balance, particularly DHA and EPA

If you think your essential fatty acid intake is inadequate for good health try to eat more oily fish, however you may be interested to take the easier and more affordable option of supplementing your diet with fish oil omega-3 DHA and EPA fatty acids.

How Can DHA In Fish Oil Help Benefit Rheumatoid Arthritis Sufferers

Let’s face it, if you are unfortunate enough to suffer from arthritis and you’re not supplementing your diet with fish oil high in DHA fatty acid you’re probably doing yourself a disservice

The evidence is pretty much overwhelming these days based on the findings of hundreds of scientific research studies on the benefits of fish oil omega-3 fatty acids on arthritis particularly rheumatoid arthritis.

Just the other day I read an article about how researchers from Queen Mary, University of London and Harvard medical school have recently discovered that your body can convert DHA fatty acid into the chemical Resolvin D2.

They said this discovery was very important because Resolvin D2 apparently could be used as a base to treat inflammation involved in causing illness, which can also lead to serious diseases.

Most of us already understand that our body cannot make its own omega-3 so it gets it from a variety of vegetables and oils, with flaxseed having very high levels of ALA.

However the best source of DHA and EPA is from cold-water sea dwelling fish like mackerel, cod, herrings, tuna and salmon.

By increasing the amount of oily fish you consume each week, or by supplementing your diet with omega-3 fatty acid capsules, you will add another method of helping to reduce your rheumatoid arthritis suffering. Always remember to consult your doctor before starting any new supplementation.

If you do decide to use fish oil supplements to increase your levels of especially DHA and EPA, make sure to thoroughly check out and evaluate the brand you intend to buy. There are hundreds of fish oil capsules available on the market, so take care to find the purest and safest one with the right DHA to EPA blend.

There’s really no doubt about it — DHA fatty acid arthritis fish oil capsules used in conjunction with your regular rheumatoid arthritis medication can be even more beneficial in helping to relieve your painful condition.

If your interested to find out and understand more about the DHA fatty acid I choose to take daily, visit my website below.

Revealing the Fish Oil Brain Relation that will Help You Now!

The facts are out. Medial science has proven that the use of fish oil has many benefits for our health. From heart health to skin health, there is even a fish oil brain connection that isn’t left out.

One of the most astounding finds is that the intake of omega 3 can promote a healthy brain. So if you are currently in a stage of your life where you are thinking about brain health…read on. Discover the fish oil brain connection that may make a difference in your life.

I never thought that I would ever be concerned about my brain. But, as you get older, you start thinking about how to provide your body with the best nutrients possible.

Nutrients found in food sources rich in omega3 like flax oil, various nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts and cashews) and seeds (pumpkin and sesame), farm fresh meats and eggs and greens which are found to have higher levels of essential fatty acids.

And then I soon realized, the best and most available sources of omega3 are cold water oily fish. For instance, fish like herring, mackerel, salmon and lake trout.

Because after all, it all starts with a healthy brain. Otherwise how can everything work.

Scientist from around the world are beginning to realize the importance of omega 3 to the brain. And have they ever found out some remarkable facts.

A group of scientists at Louisiana State University have found that fish oil may aid in protecting the brain from cognitive problems. This would include groups of people who have Alzheimer’s disease. With a discovery like that who needs any other motivation.

I found it hard to believe but the omega 3 in fatty fish has many other benefits for the brain. It seems to make people happier. Studies have shown that there is less depression and suicidal tendencies in people who have adequate amounts of omega 3 in their system.

There may not have been a more important medical discovery in our times than the connection between omega 3 and our mental health. The many benefits that DHA has on our brain functions cannot be over stated. You now realize the benefits of the fish oil brain connection so there is no time to lose.

Sometimes Suggesting The Best Fish Oil Is Not Enough

For years when someone would mention that they had found the best fish oil people would just roll their eyes believing that the messenger was simply some kind of health nut pushing another brand of snake oil. But a strange thing happened to this fellow on his way to the natural health funny farm; science started to support his enthusiasm for finding the best fish oil.

Nevertheless, still omega 3 rich supplements such as fish oil and flax oil are being met with a great deal of skepticism. I know this because just the other day I happened to hear a conservation between a couple in their late 40’s or early 50’s that was quite enlightening. The man who was in somewhat poor health, who had a history of heart disease and rheumatoid arthritis, had paid a visit to his long time doctor for his annual checkup. Expecting a new wiz band medication he was shocked when the doctor asked him if he had considered supplementing his diet with the best fish oil he could find. I don’t know what was said between doctor and patient after that but what I do know is what this man said to his wife. Rather than embracing the new side effect free supplementation ideas he rebelled, and was furious that his physician had suggested something like this after all this time. After all he needed help, not some natural fish oil that couldn’t possibly produce any noticeable results. He then mentioned that the doctor must have found this information on the Internet because he had run out of ideas.

The truth here is that this gentleman probably has a very good doctor that keeps up with current research trends rather than staying stuck in the past. Many top cardiologist have are embracing omega 3 rich foods and supplements due to their ability to quell general inflammation.

This benefit found in the best fish oil supplements is thought to be produced by two essential omega 3 fatty acids; docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA is essential for the proper functioning of our brains as adults, and for the development of our nervous system and visual abilities during the first six months of life. In addition, omega 3 fatty acids as a part of a healthy diet plan have a positive effect on existing heart disease, help lower triglycerides,  lower blood pressure, reduce the risk of blood clots, improve artery health, and reduce the amount of plaque in the arteries.

So the doctor was really trying to tell this man what they were doing wasn’t having the desired effect and that perhaps trying the best omega 3 rich fish oil he could find just might improve his overall prognosis.

What Next? Finding the best fish oil or best fish oils involves both purity and high DHA levels. Generally the best fish oil is considered to be pharmaceutical grade and contains fish body oils from cold water fish such as salmon, herring, hoki, and/or tuna. Also, make sure molecular distillation has been used to separate the toxins (mercury etc…) from the fish oil based on molecular weight fractionation.

Garlic – The Anti Everything

Garlic limits inflammatory compounds

Garlic is great at reducing inflammation because it contains compounds that inhibit lipoxygenase and cyclooxygenase which are enzymes that promote inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes. Along with the Vitamin C it contains, these anti-inflammatory compounds in fresh garlic make it especially useful in protecting the body against severe attacks of asthma and can also reduce the pain and inflammation that is caused by osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis

NF Kappa B and the common cold

Studies conducted at the University of Munich in Germany have found garlic to significantly reduce the activity of the chemical mediator of inflammation: NF kappa-B. Nuclear transcription factor (NF) kappa-B is a chemical that is activated as part of your immune systems inflammatory response to invading organisms. A surge in NF kappa-B can be triggered by things like allergenic foods, high levels of omega-6 fatty acids, colds, physical trauma and other infections. This NF kappa-B surge promotes the inflammation response and sets up ideal conditions for viruses to replicate. In these German studies, unfertilized garlic caused a 25% drop in NF kappa-B activity in blood samples.

Allicin: the microbe killer

Allicin, the sulfur compound that forms when garlic is chopped or otherwise crushed, not only gives garlic that distinctive pungency, it is also a powerful antiviral and antibacterial agent with the ability to annihilate potentially harmful microbes. Research studies on Allicin show it to be effective against the common cold, flu and stomach viruses. It has also shown the ability to fight off Candida yeast and even defend the body against powerful pathogens such as tuberculosis and botulism.

Peptic ulcers

Garlic cannot prevent a person from getting an infection from Heliobacter pylori, the bacterium which causes peptic ulcers. However, eating garlic may help keep this bacterium from doing too much damage. A study conducted in Turkey compared two groups of people: one group that loved to eat lots of garlic both raw and cooked and another group that avoided it at all costs. Blood samples were collected for 19 months and evaluated for the presence of H.pylori. While both groups did display comparable results when it came to the presence of the bacterium, the garlic loving group did display a much lower H.pylori antibody count within their blood.

Drug resistant Strains of Bacteria

Garlic has also shown the ability to be a potent antibiotic even against strains of drug resistant bacteria. A study published in 2003 by the University of California Irvine Medical School, showed that garlic juice displayed significant antibacterial activity against many antibiotic-resistant strains including staphylococci, enterococci and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Discover Fish Oil Health Benefits

Have you read about this recently?  In a recent article written by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, scientist discuss the fish oil health benefits for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and whether it is wiser to eat seafood or take a supplement.  Some research groups recommend eating more seafood.  Others recommend taking a supplement.  A few recommend both.

For example, if you happen to be a pregnant woman, researchers have recommended that you eat two servings of low-mercury seafood per week and take a supplement that provides at least 500mg of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) every day, as well as your regular pre-natal vitamin.  That recommendation is made, because DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid found only in seafood and some types of marine algae, is essential for normal brain and eye development in the fetus.

If you do enjoy seafood, you should check out the consumption advisories published by the Environmental Defense Fund, the CDC and the EPA.  Some species should be eaten no more than once per month.  Some should be avoided entirely.

Women and children are most susceptible to the mercury and PCB content.  But, men should be careful, too.  Too many PCBs can increase the risk of cancer.

The fish oil health benefits cannot counteract the negative effects of consuming mercury or PCBs, but supplement manufacturers can have each batch of oils tested for those contaminants, insuring that none are present.  It is not possible to test every piece of seafood for contaminants, because testing destroys the food.

So, when advisories are made, it is just a “guesstimate”.  There is no way to be certain which species are safe and which are not.  One serving could have two or three times the contaminants present in another.

The North Carolina researchers concluded that more research is needed to investigate the fish oil health benefits, the potential adverse effects of certain species and how cooking affects the nutritional value.  If you read much of the scientific research, you will see that one of the most common conclusions is that more research is needed.

Continuing research is important in order to arrive at specific dosage recommendations.  It will also be necessary if US residents are ever to be aware of all of the fish oil health benefits.  The FDA will not sign off on health claims associated with nutritional supplements, unless there is more research.

Preventing over-stated and unverifiable claims that could be misleading is an important job for the FDA.  But, sometimes, they seem to overdo it.  For example, the company that makes Nyquil added vitamin C to their cold relief formula, without first receiving approval from the FDA.

The FDA told them to change the formula, because there is no “proof” that vitamin C helps people recover from a cold more quickly.  There is no proof that alcohol, which is the main ingredient in Nyquil, helps people recover from a cold, either.  It just helps them sleep.

The Real Truth About Cold Pressed Enteric Omega 3 Supplements Revealed

You may have heard recently about cold pressed enteric omega 3 as opposed to the usual kind of fish oil, so what does it mean and are there increased benefits to be had?

Well the truth is that they contain much lower quality oil than most fish oil supplements and can be potentially harmful if there are not distilled. Cold pressed enteric omega 3 is just a gimmick used by manufacturers to enable them to charge more for a product which offers little benefits.

What an enteric coating does is allow the contents to pass safely through the stomach and into the upper intestine, which is great for nutritional supplements, but not for omega 3 oil as it should be released into the stomach for maximum effectiveness.

What an enteric coating does here is disguise rancid and stale oil so you don’t get those fishy burps you would get if released properly! The cold pressed aspect is just playing on the fact that many substances like olive oil for example provide more benefits if they use this process.

So you should never select a fish oil that has this type of coating as a high quality one will not give you any unpleasant repeating and will provide far more health benefits.

To select the best oils ensure they have undergone molecular distillation. This process separates out the toxins like arsenic and lead from the oil and concentrates the amount of omega 3 even further.

The two main fatty acids provided by fish oil are EPA and DHA. You want to look for high DHA levels to get the maximum benefits with at least 250mg per capsule. Check the label or website for the individual amounts and if they are combined, don’t go for it as this always means low DHA and high amounts of the less useful EPA.

Now you know the truth about cold pressed enteric omega 3, you can confidently go about selecting the best fish oil supplements and enjoy all the many benefits they provide without having to worry about the risks.

How to Find the Purest Fish Oil

Here’s a really simple way to find the purest fish oil.  It should be easy!  Right?  Every company should provide the utmost in purity.  They should also provide proof.  But, most companies don’t.

The proof that you are looking for in this case is a certificate of analysis (COA) from an independent laboratory.  Manufacturers do not have the necessary equipment to test for impurities at their own facilities.

If impurities are found, it is necessary to use molecular distillation or another technique to remove them.  With molecular distillation, all detectable levels of an impurity can be removed.

So, you might say that the purest fish oil is one that has been molecularly distilled.  But, molecular distillation apparently removes some element from the natural triglycerides that are responsible for the oil’s anti-inflammatory activity, according to laboratory studies.

Researchers have compared the anti-inflammatory activity of a standard supplement, a concentrated one and a blend that contains natural triglycerides.  They found that the blend containing the triglycerides had more anti-inflammatory activity.  They just can’t explain why.

It was thought that the anti-inflammatory activity was due solely to the omega-3 content.  But, the concentrated supplement had the highest percentage of omega-3s.

In other studies, it has been shown that omega-3s are converted within the body into hormones that are less inflammatory than those hormones produced from omega-6s.  It has also been shown that omega-3s stimulate the production of anti-inflammatory molecules.  But, those findings still did not seem to explain the amount of inflammation relief that has been seen in arthritis studies.

The additional anti-inflammatory activity of the natural triglycerides does seem to explain the reduction in morning stiffness and pain that has been seen in those studies.  Volunteers in the studies have been able to reduce the amount of pain-relieving medications that they take every day, which is a bonus for their livers.

So, is it possible to get the purest fish oil and the best anti-inflammatory benefits?  It is possible if companies are selective about the species that they select.

The north Atlantic is obviously polluted, heavily.  The Pacific is becoming that way, too.  The cleanest waters are found off of the coast of Antarctica.  So, fish that swim in that area will have the least amount of contaminants in their tissues and organs.

Contaminants are most highly concentrated in the liver.  So, Cod liver oil is not a great choice.  The purest fish oil is pressed from the flesh, not from the liver.

One species of coldwater fish that is gaining in popularity is called the hoki.  The hoki has a large strip of fat running through each filet.  It helps to keep the hoki warm in the cold deep waters that it inhabits.

The fat is rich in Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA, which is somewhat unusual.  Most species have a higher concentration of EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) than DHA.  While both are good for us, DHA seems to be most important, according to clinical trials.

Cold Pressed Enteric Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplements – The Truth You Need to Know

You must have heard about cold pressed enteric omega 3 fish oil supplements several times; it has even become a unique selling point for most brands. But the question is, what does it really mean and how does it benefit you as a consumer?

The truth is that manufacturers are coining out marketing slogans regularly; most of these slogans do not have anything to do with the quality of the product being promoted. That is exactly the case with cold pressed enteric omega 3.

Omega3 is an essential nutrient we all need; our bodies cannot manufacture it, so we get it through diets and supplementation. However, we are encouraged to take supplements because our foods nowadays do not contain most of the nutrients we need.

Fish oil omega3 is better than plant sourced version because fishoil contains DHA and EPA. Plants such as flax contain ALA, which must be turned to dha and epa before your body can make use of it. Sadly enough, such conversions are restricted and inefficient. Hence, Taking fishoil supplements is more beneficial than taking flaxseed oil supplement.

Now back to the issue of cold pressed enteric omega 3; the point is, manufacturers want you to believe that enteric coated supplements are better than those that are not coated. They claim that the coating protects the nutrient from your stomach acid. That is not correct; the stomach acid does not have any harmful effect on omega-3 fatty acid. On the contrary, it is even better for the nutrient to be released in your stomach.

The truth they do not want you to know is that most often than not, they use the coating to mask rancid odor. Fish is easily oxidized leading to rancidity. Rancid oil is very dangerous; it increases free radicals which can cause various diseases and premature aging. Unfortunately, if you buy a cold pressed enteric omega 3 supplement, you will not know whether the oil has gone rancid or not because of the ‘masking’.

So, instead of looking for enteric coated omega 3 fish oil capsule, look for one that is pure and high in DHA. Molecular distillation removes impurities from the oil and high amount of DHA makes the supplement more effective. It is recommended that you buy supplements that contain a minimum of 250mg of dha per 1000mg of fishoil capsule (that should be about double the amount of epa).

Now that you know the truth about cold pressed enteric omega 3, you can make the right choice by buying molecularly distilled fish oil supplement that contains high amount of dha.
