Top Vitamin and Supplement Private Labeling Trends For 2010

The vitamin and supplement private labeling industry has proven to be ingeniously sustainable even in the midst of a great economic recession. Making the most of the opportunity, private labeling has found a comfortable niche by providing consumers with the best quality health supplements at cost effective, competitive prices. Private labeling has been so successful that the difference between branded supplements and those that are private labeled is hardly noticeable. Comparable quality and significant savings have established a loyal patronage for private label supplements.

As we approach 2010, we see consumer trends moving towards making purchases that have an ethical foundation behind them. Consumers have a broader worldview and anything that helps them feel they are doing their own little bit in building a better future is key in driving future sales. People are looking at where ingredients come from, methods used in manufacturing, greener solutions, environmental factors, eco-friendly packaging as well as social costs involved.

We’ll also see a rise in the sale of health supplements that offer products with claims like “Gluten free”, “Organic certified” or even “Kosher-certified”, as they are perceived to have more value in terms of quality and manufacturing practices. People are willing to pay extra for a little more value, especially if it is perceived to offer higher quality supplements.

What should private labelers focus on in the coming year? Here’s a look at what consumers are looking for:

Probiotics – As Americans continue to learn that friendly bacteria are good to eat, we’ve seen a prolific rise in the sale of probiotics. Known to help IBS and alleviate other gastrointestinal symptoms, probiotics is seen as a natural solution to promoting healthy digestion. Since many people may not like the idea of eating foods fortified with friendly bacteria, the preference for probiotic supplements is likely to see more popularity in 2010. A key sales driver is creating more public awareness about specific strains of probiotics and their relationship to health.

Glucosamine – Startling research on glucosamine sulfate and other joint health protective herbs will continue to boost the sale of joint supplements as consumers learn more about their benefits. Glucosamine combined with other herbal pain killers is likely to be more popular as consumers turn away from conventional NSAIDs to treat joint pain and adopt more natural means that not only alleviate pain but also have restorative properties to joint health with fewer side effects.

Prostate supplements – With nationwide statistics rising on prostate health issues, a greater awareness of proactive prostate health is also on the rise. Nutritional supplements containing well-researched ingredients, such as beta sitosterol are predicted to be more in demand as more doctors recommend this form of nutritional therapy for prostate health.

Immune Boosters – Immune health will continue to be a high health priority in 2010. Immune boosting supplements are giving consumers the opportunity to take a proactive stance on strengthening their immune system. Immunity cannot be achieved instantaneously, and as a result, most Americans are seeing the need to regularly supplement their diets with immune boosters.

Natural or Herbal supplements – There is a rising trend for purchasing natural or herbal supplements as more research supports the use of certain nutrients to target specific health concerns. Heart health, diabetes, obesity and cancer are some of the top national health concerns and supplements can act as a means of proactive healthcare while America continues to face these growing concerns.

Stress Relievers – The recession is not over. With the unemployment rate currently at 10%, Americans haven’t seen the end of their worries. Natural and herbal stress relievers are easily available over the counter, and are known to have fewer side effects. Statistics show that more Americans are turning to herbal stress relievers to cope with life and the trend is more than likely to continue.

Energy Boosters – More people are facing constant fatigue whether due to stress, low energy levels, or the fact that we live fast-paced lives that demand more out of us. Energy boosters are growing in popularity and not just with the younger generation. Housewives, students, and even the elderly are looking to energy drinks or powders formulated to their own specific needs for a good pick-me-up!

Pet Supplements – With more focused efforts on personal health and increased use of nutritional supplements to meet health needs, family pets are enjoying this attention too. Pet supplements for joint health, multi-vitamins and other nutritional supplements will continue to grow in popularity. Organic pet supplements are the preferred choice especially in light of several conventionally manufactured pet supplement recalls in 2009.

Fiber supplements or Herbal colon cleansers – Digestive health is a big topic and cleansing the colon is a necessary part of internal personal hygiene. The prolific rise of herbal colon cleansers is proof of this. Many of these are also associated with weight loss or enhancing weight loss. Prebiotics (fiber) is a common component of herbal colon cleansing programs.

Memory supplements – Substantial breakthrough research on the brain has revealed that nutrients can play an effective role in brain health and cognitive functioning. Positive scientific research has driven the baby boomer generation to turn to nutritional supplements to boost memory and support brain health. This trend will continue in 2010.

Scientific research has much to do with the quality of a supplement. Statistics show that supplements that are supported by valid research and data continue to be favored by consumers. This is unlikely to change, especially as consumers grow more educated and personally study scientific data available on ingredients and their true efficacy. When choosing a contract manufacturer, consider scientific formulation a high priority. High quality supplements that actually provide your consumers with benefits they are looking for will keep your customers loyal to your brand of private labeled supplements.

Learn about a Fish Oil Blood Pressure Reducing Supplement

I can’t think of anyone that wouldn’t benefit from supplementing their diet with a quality DHA omega 3 fish oil blood pressure lowering supplement.  This type of supplement is especially important for someone that has a history of hypertension, and wants to get it under control before it gets bad enough they have to resort to prescription medications.

Supplementing with omega 3s can also aid the person who is already on blood pressure medication, by allowing them to cut back on their dosage.  You want to take as few pharmaceutical drugs as possible, because no matter how effective they are they all have adverse side effects.  You will however want to inform your doctor about taking omega 3s, and let them decide when and if you can lower or go off your medication.

DHA omega 3 fish oil blood pressure lowering supplements can have an amazing effect on your overall cardiovascular health.  DHA omega 3 fatty acid also lowers your triglyceride levels, reduces your heart rate, lessens the risk of death from cardiac arrhythmia reducing heartbeat irregularities, and prevents clotting by not allowing blood platelets to stick together.  It will also inhibit the formation of plaque on the artery walls.

Cardiovascular benefits are not all that you can expect from supplementing your diet with omega 3s.  DHA and EPA omega fatty acids offer benefits to all of the inflammatory ailments that many of us suffer from.  These essential nutrients will alleviate your symptoms from arthritis, gout, allergies, asthma, inflammatory bowel disease, and a variety of skin problems, and could actually prevent their development all together.

Another major disease that your DHA omega 3 fish oil blood pressure lowering dietary supplement can treat or prevent is adult onset non-insulin dependent diabetes.  DHA can help to regulate the blood sugar levels of those already suffering from the disease by increasing insulin production from the beta cells of the pancreas.  They also make the person less insulin resistant, which lowers glucose uptake and metabolism.

High levels of DHA and EPA omega fatty acids also aid in maintaining healthy mental function.  By guaranteeing proper membrane function and membrane fluidity you can reduce the risk of suffering from depression and other mood disorders, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.  These essential nutrients also prevent the formation of amyloid plaque that is associated with Alzheimer’s disease.

As you can clearly see, DHA omega 3 fish oil blood pressure lowering supplement can help you in a lot of different areas.  I could never understand with all of the benefits that these nutrients offered why anybody would even think twice about adding them to their daily routine.  Do yourself a favor, and get the whole family taking  these supplements, because you want everyone to have the best chance at maintaining or improving their health.

Make no mistake about it.  The addition of a DHA omega 3 fish oil blood pressure lowering supplement could change your life for the better, and considering that some of these formulas start at .29 cents per capsule they are a steal.  A very, very small price to pay for optimum health.

Milk Thistle Safety-All you need to know to avail of Milk Thistle’s benefits

In general terms milk thistle safety is not an issue. The health benefits of Milk Thistle are well-known for the treatment of liver and gallbladder disorders. It targets the pancreas and stomach. It’s rich in bio-flavonoids, and it’s character is hepato-tonic, alternative, demulcent and protective.

As far as its properties, it does not easily dissolve in water, so it’s best utilized in either a dry form or liquid form. The simplest way to take dried milk thistle is to purchase it in capsule form.

The milk thistle seeds can be used in cooking or even eaten alone. Most health food stores stock milk thistle, but sometimes it may appear as ‘Thisilyn, Silymarin, or silybum’. In its best form milk thistle will be guaranteed to contain 80% silymarin. The best way to ensure safety is to learn about it, both in how it works, and the best ways to administer it.

A new form of silymarin, the active ingredient in the milk thistle plant, which may be even more absorbable than other types. It’s silymarin that has been bound to phosphatidycholine. The binding enhances the silymarin compounds until they become more clinically effective in the body.

No contraindications are associated with this herb even in substantial doses. Numerous European studies have shown little to no toxicity. Rarely silymarin can cause looser stools, but not for the most part. When taking it in high doses, it’s a good idea to add a source of fiber to the diet to prevent the loose stool effect.

Long term use of milk thistle poses no long term problem because of its non-toxicity. The suggested fibers to take with milk thistle ar psyllium, pectin, and oat bran.

Compounds known as antioxidants help to minimize the damaging effects of free radicals, which attack chemical structures. One such substance, which is not as familiar as the common vitamin C or beta-carotene, is the herb known as milk thistle. The properties, as protective agents, are astounding.

Milk thistle was used by the Romans, who recognized the value of this herb for the liver impairments. They routinely used the seeds and roots to restore and rejuvenate a diseased liver. A famous ancient Roman, Pliny the Elder, recorded how the juice of the milk thistle, mixed with honey, was used for carrying off bile.

Some other uses were for the treatment of jaundice, lack of appetite, stomach disorders, and kyspepsia.
The homeopathic uses were for peritonitis, varicose veins, uterine congestion, and coughs. Tonics were often made from the leaves, but the most valuable part of the plant was the seeds.

This supplement also enhances the quality of blood proteins which help move toxins out of the blood. The components of Silymarin are referred to as true hepato-protective or ‘liver friendly’. In general it is true to say that with milk thistle safety is not a major issue and the way is clear to enjoy all the health benefits of Milk Thistle

Julie is a firm believer in the benefits of vitamins and nutritional supplements especially the health benefits of Milk Thistle and Green Tea Benefits

Best Winter Foods for Weight Loss

Winter season is around the corner and that means less time spent outside. The cold weather and gray skies may be doing more to sabotage your weight than you think. The colder temperatures seem to bring on cravings for foods containing carbohydrates, fats and sugars. People are tempted to eat heavy meals, like pastas with heavy sauces, mashed potatoes, creamy soups and bread. Make small adjustments to your winter routines to combat winter pounds. Small steps will make simple changes lifelong habits.

Drink two glasses of vegetable juice every day. A higher intake of vegetables can promote weight loss, but it isn’t always convenient to prepare and eat fresh foods. Vegetable juice is a convenient, enjoyable way to help you get your recommended daily servings. Drinking vegetable juice, according research conducted at the Baylor College helped overweight individuals with metabolic syndrome lose more weight than non-juice drinkers.

Everyone seems to want to avoid winter weight gain. Here’s how to do just that: -

1. Eat more plant based foods. Diets low in plant based foods can affect both health and weight, and may in part be responsible for annual weight gain. (See “How to Prevent Obesity and Disease with Plant Based Foods”.)

2. Be watchful of what you eat. The holidays, being inside more, less activity and boredom, all play a part in our eating (or overeating) patterns in the winter. Our tendencies during the colder season is to eat heavier foods (typically termed “comfort” foods), such as macaroni and cheese, cream based soups, and others.

3. Exercise every day. Thirty minutes a day is a good starting point, provided you are healthy enough for that level of physical activity. In poor weather, move your workout indoors. A small trampoline for jogging and exercise is a small investment that can improve your health and fitness level.

4. Add Vitamin D to Your Diet – winter means shorter days and less sun, which results in your body absorbing less vitamin D. Research, has shown that people who do not get enough Vitamin D in their diet or through direct sunlight are at a higher risk of obesity.

5. Drink two glasses of vegetable juice every day. A higher intake of vegetables can promote weight loss, but it isn’t always convenient to prepare and eat fresh foods.

Winter Foods: -

1. Butternut, pumpkins and squash are great sources of beta-carotene, one of the most powerful antioxidants in our winter arsenal.

2. Mushrooms enhance immune response by boosting the production of white blood cells. It brings vitality to the cells by increasing cellular metabolism, removing toxins and preventing free radical damage.

3. Chicken is a good source of selenium and vitamin E, the antioxidants that can boost immunity. Hot chicken soup blocks the migration of inflammatory white cells because cold symptoms are a response to the cells’ accumulation in the bronchial tubes.

4. Fish is a rich source of zinc and the omega-3 fatty acids, both of which boost health in winter. Zinc increases the production of white blood cells that fight infection and helps your body to fight diseases more aggressively.

5. Tea has many health benefits ranging from possible cancer prevention to lowering the risk for overweight. Now, research also shows that tea might boost immunity. Tea is rich in polyphones as well as a number of other chemicals that can help protect the body against cold or flu.

Want to avoid getting the flu? Then check out Beta Glucan, nature’s most powerful immune stimulant known

It seems that every time I turn on the TV or go online I cannot get away from hearing another report about H1N1 or the swine flu virus. And if we want to avoid it we are told that we MUST get vaccinated for it.  I don’t know about you but I have never been a fan of vaccines. I haven’t had a flu shot for the past 24 years and– knock on wood–I have never gotten the flu.

Is it because I am just lucky? Maybe, but I believe it has to do more with the actions I take to strengthen my immune system which stacks the odds in my favor so as not get sick with the flu. I firmly believe that maintaining a strong immune system will always beat out a flu shot.

Many years ago I came across a report and study about Beta Glucan which claimed it is nature’s strongest immunity enhancer. The report went on to say that beta glucan is the most powerful immune stimulant known and is a very powerful ally in lowering cholesterol and triglycerides, normalizing blood sugar levels, rejuvenating your skin and can enhance the effectiveness of other vitamins and mineral supplements.

The more research I did about Beta Glucan, the more convinced I became that I needed to incorporate this powerful and natural ingredient into my health regimen.

Recently I was referred to a new product, Immune RX which helps strengthen the immune system. Knowing already about the wonders of Beta Glucan, I was pleasantly surprise to discover that two of the product’s key ingredients is a potent source of beta glucan – maitake mushrooms and baker’s yeast. This shows me that the manufacturer understands that if you’re going to create an effective immune enhancer supplement that it must include beta glucan. Throw in other immune enhancer ingredients like vitamins C & E, astragalus, zinc and a few others and you would have one very powerful immune supplement ever created.

I cannot say enough about this wondrous substance. I have had the chance to look at many reports regarding studies and trials about beta glucan and they all reach the same conclusion, it is by far the best natural substance you can take without the fear of side effects to help you if you suffer from many ailments and diseases and for a healthy person, helps you become even stronger and feel better.

If you’re like me who looks to minimize or avoid putting synthetic cures into your body and prefer taking a common sense and natural approach to health care, then you need to seriously take a look at this product.

Jonathan is passionate about healthy living on a common sense approach. Wealth, fame and power would be meaningless without health. To learn more about a common sense approach to healthy living visit http://healthxtend.wordpress.com/

Antibiotic-Resistant Disease Killing Humans and Swine

Health officials said the bacteria is being
transmitted to humans through pigs. The
increased use of antibiotics in agriculture may
be behind the spread of the resistant strain.

What are ESBLs?

Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamases (ESBLs) are
actually enzymes produced by certain types of
bacteria, which renders the bacteria resistant
to the antibiotics commonly used to treat them.

ESBLs were first discovered in the mid-1980s. At
the time they were mostly found in the
Klebsiella species of bacteria, in hospital
intensive care units. Until recently, few people
were affected by these mutated bacteria and it
didn’t appear to be a major growing concern.

That has changed, however. According to the
British Health Protection Agency (HPA), a new
class of ESBL (called CTX-M enzymes) has emerged,
which are now being widely detected among E.Coli
bacteria. These ESBL-producing E. Coli are
resistant to penicillins and cephalosporins, and
are becoming more frequent in urinary tract
infections.

Other species of bacteria that can now produce
ESBLs include:

K. pneumoniae
K. oxytoca
Salmonella
Proteus mirabilis
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
The Problem is Worse Than You Think!

According to a study published October 2007 in
the Journal of the American Medical Association
(JAMA), there were close to 100,000 cases of
invasive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
aureus (MRSA) infections in the United States
in 2005, which lead to more than 18,600 deaths.

To put that number into perspective, HIV/AIDS
killed 17,000 people that year.

Antibiotic-resistant disease IS a major man-made
problem.

This was the study that propelled MRSA into the
news last year, combined with a number of school
outbreaks that took place around the same time.
Discussions focused largely on reducing medical
over-use of antibiotics, and proper hygiene such
as washing your hands with soap and water to
reduce the spread of infectious disease.

But little has been said about the rampant
over-use of antibiotics in agriculture, which is
a MAJOR source of human antibiotic consumption,
and hence increased antibiotic resistance.

Agriculture as a Source of Antibiotic Resistance

Both MRSA and ESBL are being traced back to
animals raised for food production, especially
pigs.

These animals are often fed antibiotics at low
doses for disease prevention and growth promotion.
Animals receiving antibiotics in their feed gain
4 to 5 percent more body weight than animals that
do not receive antibiotics, but the price is high
for you, the end consumer, because this practice
also creates the perfect conditions for antibiotic
resistance to flourish.

Denmark’s health officials claim they’re unsure of
how farmers and veterinarians, who have not
consumed infected meat, are becoming infected.
However, according to research cited on Johns
Hopkins website, the main reservoir of these
organisms is in the lower digestive tract, and
they can persist within the gastrointestinal tract
for months. So perhaps the answer doesn’t have to
be all that complicated.

So, the meat industry practice of using antibiotics
is indeed a driving force behind the development of
antibiotic resistance in a now wide variety of
bacteria that cause human disease.

The long stalemate on this issue constitutes a
struggle between strong science and bad politics.
The FDA finally banned the use of fluoroquinolones
– a widely used class of antimicrobials — from
agricultural use August 1997, but not without the
Bayer Corporation kicking and screaming in vehement
opposition. After all, antibiotics for livestock
use is big business. It constitutes about 70
percent of ALL antibiotic use! They couldn’t
replace that market with human consumers even if
they tried.

Other Agricultural Sources of Antibiotics

Another heavily tainted meat product you should stay
away from is conventionally raised chicken. A 2006
study published in the Journal of Infectious
Diseases found that bacteria from conventional
chicken and from people who ate the chicken became
resistant to Synercid, a strong antibiotic used to
treat antibiotic-resistant bacteria. In essence, it
can cause resistance to the last lines of defense
currently available in the modern medicine cabinet.

It also found that it was rare to find resistant
bacteria among antibiotic-free chicken, while the
majority of bacterial isolates from conventional
poultry were resistant.

But, the ramifications of using antibiotics in
agriculture don’t end there. Antibiotics filter
down through the food chain in sometimes
non-suspecting ways.

Antibiotics are also being transferred, via
manure, into your food supply.

A 2007 study in the Journal of Environmental
Quality looked at whether food crops will
accumulate antibiotics from soil covered with
antibiotic-containing manure.

In a greenhouse setting, corn, lettuce and
potatoes were grown on soil that contained hog
manure with a commonly used veterinary
antibiotic added.

The antibiotics were absorbed by all three
crops, into both their leaves and tissue.
Meanwhile, the antibiotics also transferred to
the potato tubers, suggesting that root crops
like carrots, radishes and potatoes may be
particularly at risk of antibiotic accumulation.

These findings unfortunately also have
implications for organic farmers, who often use
manure as their main source of fertilizer. And,
as it stands, manure that contains antibiotics
is still allowed under the organic label.

How to Avoid Excessive Antibiotic Exposure

So how can you ensure that the food you feed to
yourself and your family is pure and healthy?

Apart from growing it yourself, your best option
is to get to know a local farmer near you — one
who uses non-toxic farming methods. If you live
in an urban area, there are increasing numbers of
community-supported agriculture programs available
that give you access to healthy, locally grown
foods even if you live in the heart of the city.

If you are looking for a safer alternative to
commercially raised beef please be sure to check
out grass-fed beef. Grass-fed cattle are not
routinely fed antibiotics. They may occasionally
receive them for an infection, but that would be
the rare exception, and even then they are only
used for a few days.
